Russian term

Четвероевангелие

Russian to English Social Sciences Religion
Is this :
A) a copy of the four canonical Gospels, placed separately back to back in one volume; or
B) a harmony of the Gospels (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gospel_harmony), i.e. the four Gospel accounts synthesized into one continued narrative?
Proposed translations (English)

I lost the source...it was somewhere on Википедия, I'll try to hunt it up. This isn't for a specific translation I'm doing: I just came across it once and wanted to know the term's exact meaning in case it came up again in my reading.

Я спросил у Яндекса... (с) "Четвероевангелие - это свод всех четырех Евангелий в хронологическом порядке".

The Misha Feb 14, 2014:
I'd say it's the first of your two options or a cumulative name for the four canonical Gospels regardless of their physical form. BTW, the term itself seems to be more common in Bulgarian rather than Russian sources. Of course, what your source means by it is a totally different kettle of fish. We'll never know until we see the sentence, or better yet the entire paragraph.

Four Gospels

Your first version is correct,

". Первые четыре книги называются "ЧЕТВЕРОЕВАНГЕЛИЕМ" или просто "ЕВАНГЕЛИЕМ", потому что в них содержится "благая весть" (слово "ЕВАНГЕЛИЕ" по-гречески значит: "благая" или "добрая весть", почему и переведено на русский язык словом "благовествование") о приходе в мир обещанного Богом прародителям Божественного Искупителя и о совершенном Им великом деле спасения человечества.

neutral The Misha : No, don't kid yourself. No one uses that. It's just a bad translation from Bulgarian.

agree Michael Korovkin : On the contrary (to Misha): chapeau! It's the exactly correct translation. And if the oinking contemporaries don't understand that, it's their problem, not ours!
