: the Russian equivalent would be нет пророка в своём отечестве; i think the expression has a slightly different meaning, but i agree that it may still fit some contexts

Discussion
I like the almost poetic rhythm here and the verbal, rather than nominative, form that would be more native to English. I do, however, increasingly like Zmejka's version better. It's shorter and more elegant. Many thanks everyone, it's been a great discussion.
