This may work, thanks. It's quite elegant too. Let's wait awhile though, all right? |

A prophet is not without honour save in his own country.
Quotation from Gospel according to St. Mark, chapter 6 verse 4.
The Russian version of this may well also be used in the same way, but it seems a fair equivalent of the expression in the question.

Note from asker:
Thank you, Sir. This seems to have the extra benefit of a biblical allusion which I did not even know existed. My own would be with a spy movie or something I saw as a (Russian) kid. I agree with zmejka though, it's a better fit for нет пророка в своем отчестве. |

: the Russian equivalent would be нет пророка в своём отечестве; i think the expression has a slightly different meaning, but i agree that it may still fit some contexts

Thanks much. There is no rhythm though, wouldn't you agree? Maybe it's a fairly lousy poet in me talking. Let's see what else may pop up. I'll show my own version in the end, I promise. |

Discussion
I like the almost poetic rhythm here and the verbal, rather than nominative, form that would be more native to English. I do, however, increasingly like Zmejka's version better. It's shorter and more elegant. Many thanks everyone, it's been a great discussion.
