Hi everybody,
I would like to ask your opinion about a good smartphone model, according to your experiences.
I actually have a Galaxy Tab (http://tinyurl.com/c38trqg) but I use it very little because is not very handy to take it everywhere I go. So I am considering about buying a smartphone, basically to check the emails from my three accounts.

For this reason, I don't need a super technological smartphone (like the iPhone or something like that), because my main concern is checking the emails.
So I would need a smartphone that is really fast in receiving and sending emails and that can write pretty fast, possibly switching rapidly from one T9 language to another.
Thank you very much for your input,
Bruno

I have been looking into the same issue Sep 5, 2012

...And, according to one brochure, Blackberry is the best choice if your main use of the phone is written communication. For one thing, it has a real keyboard, which will allow you to type faster than on a tactile keyboard.

I'll be interested to see other translators' choice of smartphones, as many of my friends are in totally different sectors and have needs that are different from ours.

I do agree that is better to have a real keyboard to write faster than with touchscreen.
However, which model of Blackberry would be better?

Scale down a size Sep 5, 2012

Go for a Galaxy Note. Really handy. I had my doubts that I would want to carry this thing all over the place, but if you add a protective cover (I bought one that covers the screen and flips to one side, with no added bulk to the rim of the phone) you might find that it is very practical indeed: large screen, very fast reaction to actions, the S-Note feature for taking notes with the stylus (or with your finger if you want), a reasonably good camera...

Sorry, Bruno, I'll have to leave that question to other colleagues who are well-versed in the matter!

I have seen there are different models of the Galaxy note...
Can I ask you which model you have?
Also, do you feel ok in replying to emails with it? I find the writing with the galaxy tab a bit awkward with the touchscreen...

I do have a Galaxy Note too. Get the SwiftKey Keyboard (software app). Answering short emails with the Note and Swiftkey is considerably faster than any Blackberry or PC email solution. I started to use the Note for more and more "general" tasks.

BB Torch 9810 Sep 5, 2012

Hi Bruno,

I am in the same situation and considering Blackberry Torch 9810 (one of the Proz colleagues recommended it a while ago). It has both touchscreen and QWERTY keyboard (I personally hate the on-screen typing).

Best regards,
Svetlana

Unfortunately I do not reply emails with the Galaxy Note. This is somewhat unexplored territory for me. I plan to do it some time, but being a fast typer with a physical keyboard, using the virtual keyboard feels a bit frustrating. It would also with a Blackberry keyboard.

Blackberry is like Windows 3.1 compares to Android, iOS or Windows 8

I use a Galaxy (S) too for e-mail, Skype, Twitter, etc.

But most of the time my iPad is not far away

Regards

Hi Fernando,
thank you for the link.
Maybe the swype method could be faster, but it has been really difficult for me to use it.
I have tried it for some time, but then I have switched to the other writing system of the Galaxy Tab (like a normal keyboard).
I don't know why, maybe because I have the habit of pressing real keys, both on the pc keyboard and on my cell phone, but I really haven't managed to get used to the swype method...

Yes, of course in a Tablet it is easier to write as "usual", the screen is too big. But in a small screen it is a good thing. And yes again, swype is only for Android, AFAIK. I wanted just to say that to write fast with 10 fingers in a Keyboard doesn't mean you can write fast in a Blackberry. Anyway the possibilities of the 3 systems are far away from Blackberry.

For example video conference for free with Skype, Dropbox, Navigation, and, and, and...

A think a "old" Galaxy S could be a nice and not so expensive investment...

Nokia E71/E72 Sep 6, 2012

I’m absolutely satisfied with my Nokia E71 and if I’d have to change it now, I’d do it for E72, as they still can be found in sale. If you can find it at a local store, do not hesitate, buy.

OneNote is particularly useful. I can compile notes (text and image) whenever I need it and they automatically sync to my desktop when i am sitting down.

Adobe Acrobat Reader, Skype, Skydrive and other tools are available free from MS App market which you can access directly from your phone.

Big plus, user interface is much cleaner than iPhone and Android.

Google "Nokia Lumina" and you will see what I am talking about.

Black Berry and Nokia E series are so last year...

Tiny Blackberry keys ... and Swype language recognition Sep 6, 2012

Fernando Toledo wrote:

I've had a Blackberry for 18 months now and while it's fantastic to get email pushed to my phone (I hadn't used a smartphone before), I agree with Fernando that it isn't fast to type on the Blackberry keyboard.
When I use WhatsApp to chat to my (teenage) children it's fine because I don't mind typos slipping in in every other word, but when I use my Blackberry to reply to work emails I have to go very slowly to make sure each letter is the right one.

Plus - something that older translators need to think about - the keys are very small to see. I have adjusted the font size a bit larger than normal, but by the end of the day my aging eyes find it hard to see which key is which!

I'd be interested to know from people who use Swype or SwiftKey whether these apps are good at language recognition? I can imagine they might be excellent at offering English words, but if I then switch to Spanish (in my case), do I have to tell the app, or does it detect it immediately and automatically?
I don't mean mixing languages within an email, but responding to one email in one language and the next email in a different language.
