I love all the books in the trilogy, but can't seem to get the chapter about Saint Marie out of my head.

Uhm...... Aug 20, 2008

Gosh, tough choice!

After long pondering, I think I would say that my favorite book EVER is "The Grapes of Wrath" by John Steinbeck. This book earned Steinbeck both the Pulitzer Prize and (a couple of decades later) the Nobel Prize for Literature, and it's absolutely wonderful!
I'm biased though, because Steinbeck is one of my very favorite authors EVER!

In memoriam
Too many kinds of books, impressions they produce... Aug 20, 2008

I think you can only really answer this by giving favorites in different categories.

As a book apparently intended for children but with much in it that can be appreciated by adults, I agree with Alice in Wonderland (and Alice Through the Looking Glass). I think the Harry Potter books come high up in this category too.

As an emotionally moving war story, All Quiet on the Western Front (Im Westen Nichts Neues) by Erich Maria Remarque.

As a romantic novel, Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen.

I could go on, but I've already used up three times my quota...

I also agree that Grapes of Wrath is a splendid novel.

If I had to choose Aug 21, 2008

If I absolutely had to choose, I think it would be El túnel by Ernesto Sábato. I've read it many times and it actually gets better with time. But I have a lot of favorite books: War and Peace, El Quijote, The Earsers by Alain Robbe-Grillet is a new favorite of mine.

Now, my most beloved book is without a doubt a very old, very worn, very annotated and very read copy of Complete Poems by Javier Heraud that I got in a book fair for less than 2 dollars. I've had it with me since I wa

Now, my most beloved book is without a doubt a very old, very worn, very annotated and very read copy of Complete Poems by Javier Heraud that I got in a book fair for less than 2 dollars. I've had it with me since I was 10, and if my house is set on fire or blown away by a tornado, it would be the first thing I'd keep safe.

Science for the Citizen, by Lancelot Hogben, first published by George Allen & Unwin in 1938.

Described by the author as 'A self-educator based on the social background of scientific discovery', it was the book that encouraged me to take up engineering as a profession - at least a decade before I quit full-time education.

The other works in the triology, dubbed by the author himself as "Primers for the Age of Plenty", are:

Mathematics for the Millions (same author and publisher, 1936)
and
A Loom of Language (Frederick Bodmer, ed. Lancelot Hogben, same publisher, 1943)

I recommend the latter as a primer for anyone here with an interest in comparative linguistics.

Actually there were four works in this 'trilogy'. The last one - mentioned as 'forthcoming' in 'The Loom of Language' but missing from the collection I inherited from my father - was History for Home Students, by Henry Hamilton, ed. Lancelot Hogben. Bearing in mind the state of Europe in that period I'm not sure whether it was ever published - if anyone has a copy, please contact me!

MediaMatrix

PS. OOps! - nearly forgot! It's maybe not quite appropriate for a word-oriented community like Proz.com because it's a 'picture book'. Nonetheless it has pride of place in my library: The Human Figure in Motion, by Eadweard Muybridge, dubbed "An Electro-Photographic Investigation of Consecutive Phases of Muscular Actions", commenced in 1872, completed in 1885 and my copy was published by public suscription, by Chapman & Hall, London, in 1901.
