On the back of Jack's query regarding the new line offered to KudoZ answerers, another not-so-mysterious KudoZ feature that has puzzled me for a couple of years now:

The "Contribute to this entry" feature when reviewing KOG entries.

Do the participants of any language pair use it on a regular basis? Is everyone actually aware of this feature, that's been around now for a long time?

I view it as potentially useful idea and its purpose seems clear enough, but I think ProZ.com should consider whether it's any use or not under its current form.

When you do post a peer review it will only be visible to other users who also click the "Contribute to this entry button." (Any stats on how many people ever press this button or how often?)

I don't see that the site - or the KOG entry at any rate - actually encourages the use of this feature either so shouldn't it:

a) be promoted?
or
b) be scrapped altogether?

Most of the time, it goes completely unnoticed. In the EN>ES pair at any rate, if users reviewing a glossary entry wish to enter a remark, they do so in the form of a peer review or a note to the asker.

Surely it is in the KOG, our and ProZ.com's own interest that any feedback provided is then automatically displayed and not hidden until someone else accidentally stumbles upon it.

A final suggestion:

If ProZ.com does wish to promote this feature, why not enable it only to users who are specialised in that particular language pair and field with, say, a clearly visible text stating something along the lines of "See what other experts in the field think of this entry (x comments to date)"?

I absolutely agree with you, Álvaro. We could send a letter the moderator with these ideas.

I agree too. Apr 15, 2008

Good idea, Álvaro. I've "contributed" to a few entries, but stopped doing so when I realized no one would ever see my sagacious comments.

good point Apr 15, 2008

I agree with Alvaro.

This topic has been mentioned several times in the past with no avail. Most people don`t even know the feature exists or what it is for.
When I realized my contributions were filed some place and reaching nobody, I did the same Jane did: stop contributing.

So - as Alvaro suggests -a clearly visible text stating something along the lines "See what other experts in the field think of this entry " could be an improvement, I believe.

Excellent idea Apr 25, 2008

Hello all,

Nice point, Álvaro. I think we should try promoting this before we consider scrapping it. Note that in the KOG itself, entries and the number of entries are shown if there are any, just above the "Add comment" link, but I agree that an effort could be made to raise awareness of the existence of this feature.

Best regards,

Jared

Yes, I'd also like to see it enhanced Apr 25, 2008

Hi Jared,

Thanks for joining this thread.

Hi Jared - I hadn't noticed that, maybe because hardly any entries have added comments?

Don't get me wrong - I think it's a good feature, and I suspect that other users do too. I also think that it should be enhanced rather than scrapped.

I think it would be an extra-useful feature, especially in the case of dubious entries, particularly if only 'specialists in the field' were able to enter such comments - perhaps they could even be invited to do so when reviewing glossary entries in their field of expertise.

The problem with the feature is how it stands now. I think that those of us who are eager to contribute to ongoing improvements in the KOG eventually get frustrated because it doesn't really seem to be much use.

Thanks again,

Álvaro
