As great as Microsoft’s Zune may have been, it wasn’t the design, marketing or the timing of the product that were the problem. It takes more than all those things to survive and thrive in the Infinite Game of business. Great products fail all the time. How a company is led must also be considered. Prioritizing comparison and winning above all else, finite minded leaders will set corporate strategy, product strategy, incentive structures and hiring decisions to help meet finite goals. And with a finite mindset firmly entrenched in almost all aspects of the organization, a sort of tunnel vision results. The result of which pushes almost everyone inside the company to place excessive focus on the urgent at the expense of the important. Executives instinctively start to respond to known factors instead of exploring or advancing unknown possibilities. And in some cases, leaders can become so obsessed with what the competition is doing, falsely believing they need to react to their every move, that they become blind to a whole host of better choices to strengthen their own organization. It’s like trying to win by playing defense. Seduced by a finite mindset, Microsoft found themselves in a never-ending game of whack-amole.

In 2000, when I led Vivendi’s video games division, parent company Vivendi acquired media giant Universal. I e-mailed my boss arguing why I should be part of the team that would lead the integration of the two companies. I had worked on managing post- merger situations at McKinsey, I wrote; I had the right skills. It worked. I was selected to lead the effort that would “extract synergies” from the merger in the United States. I was to report directly to Vivendi’s chief operating officer in Paris. My appointment was announced in a press release following a board meeting. I was very excited.
Did I feel that my new job was fulfilling a noble purpose or that I would be making a positive difference in the world? Honestly, these questions were not on my mind. I must confess I put myself forward out of personal ambition. I was happy because I felt my new job took me one step closer to the top.
My excitement was short-lived, though. There were not many synergies to extract, and fortunately, it ended within 18 months. By 2002, Vivendi’s acquisition spree had left the company saddled with too much debt, plunging the company into crisis. I became part of the team that led the restructuring of the company.

Selling is simply a dance with possibility and empathy. It requires you to see the audience you’ve chosen to serve, then to bring them what they need. They might not realize it yet, but once you engage with them, either you’ll learn what’s not working in your craft or they’ll learn that you’ve created something that they’ve been waiting for, something that is filled with magic.

am Alireza and Farsi is my native language. I studied materials engineering.
However, as a language enthusiast, my passion for translation started during my
bachelor's, when I had to present different new topics in my classes. I gathered
new information from English papers and books and translated them into Farsi to
provide the best presentation. Moreover, our teachers split a book that they
wanted to publish into different parts and asked us to translate them as a
class project. Some of my friends asked me to help them with translation
because I was among the few who knew English and had the passion for
translation. It was then that I found that I can follow translation as a
career. Therefore, since 2011, I have been a freelance translator and
translated hundreds of ISI papers and dozens of books in the fields of business (marketing, branding, management, leadership, strategy, accounting), materials engineering, and personal growth. In addition, I was an
English teacher and tourist guide for a few years.
I
travel a lot and really love to learn about different cultures and communicate
with people in their own language, so in April 2022, I started to learn French
and plan to learn some more languages like Turkish, Arabic, and Spanish.
As
I have translated Start with Why written by Simon Sinek, I think it will be
nice to conclude my story with why I translate:
A
translator is a bridge that connects people. Translation helps us learn more
about other perspectives and understand each other better. By translating the
ideas and words of thought leaders to another language, I can contribute to
spreading and sharing the knowledge and concepts that inspire readers to think
about life, business, and world differently and make a difference. This is what
brings me joy and fulfillment.
