Water and Wastewater in Ancient Civilisations

Prolegomena
The rapid technological progress in the twentieth century created a disdain for the past achievements. Past water technologies, were regarded to be far behind the present ones; signified major advances achieved in the 20th century. There was a great deal of unresolved problems related to the management principles, such as the decentralisation of the processes, the durability of the water projects, the cost effectiveness, and sustainability issues such as protection from floods and droughts. In the developing world, such problems were intensified to an unprecedented degree. Moreover, new problems have arisen such as the contamination of surface and groundwater. Naturally, intensification of unresolved problems led societies to revisit the past and to reinvestigate the successful past achievements. To their surprise, those who attempted this retrospect, based on archaeological, historical, and technical evidence were impressed by two things: the similarity of principles with present ones and the advanced level of water engineering and management practices in ancient times (Koutsoyuannis et al. 2008; Mays 2008 and 2010).
Modern day water technological principles have a foundation dating back three to four thousand years ago. These achievements include technologies such as dams, wells, cisterns, aqueducts, baths, recreational structures, and even water reuse. These hydraulic works and features reflect also advanced scientific knowledge, which for instance allowed the construction of tunnels from two openings and the transportation of water both by open channels and closed conduits under pressure. Certainly, technological developments were driven by the necessities for efficient use of natural water resources in order to make civilisations more resistant to destructive natural elements, and to improve the standards of life. With respect to the latter, certain civilisations developed an advanced, comfortable and hygienic lifestyle, as manifested from public and private bathrooms and flushing toilets, which can only be compared to our modern facilities which were re- established in Europe and North America in the beginning of the last century (Angelakis et al. 2005).
With the increasing worldwide awareness of the importance of water resources management in the ancient civilisations, the IWA SG on WWAC was established in 2005 and so far two IWA International Symposia on Water and Wastewater Technologies in Ancient Civilisations has been organised in 2006 and 2009, in Iraklion, Greece and in Bari, Italy, respectively. Also, a 3rd IWA Symposium will be organised in Istanbul, Turkey, 22–24 March 2012. With the experience gained from these Symposia, it is to note that the participants are from several disciplines, with a dominant number from the water sciences, history and archaeology; but also including engineering, life, environmental, and health sciences, biology, geosciences, and others. The geographical coverage of the exposed features and facilities, is very wide, with the prominence in the Mediterranean world. However, several other civilisations from other parts of the world such as the south-western United States, South America and Asia are included. The themes are from prehistoric to medieval and modern times and are presented in a coherent and critical way.
The principles and practices in water management of ancient civilisations are not well known as well as other achievements of ancient civilisations, such as poetry, philosophy, science, politics and visual arts. A lot is to be learned from ancient technologies and practices so the SG on WWAC is also focused on the development of water technologies through centuries in various parts of the world. Specific case studies are considered. To put in perspective the ancient water management principles and practices, it is important to examine their relevance to modern times and to harvest some lessons. Furthermore, the relevance of ancient works are examined in terms of the evolution of technology, the technological advances, homeland security, and management principles. Finally, a comparative assessment of the various technologies among civilisations should be considered.
Ancient water and wastewater technology
Humans have spent most of their history as hunting and food gathering beings. Only in the last 9,000 to 10,000 years they discovered how to grow agricultural crops and tame animals. Such revolution probably first took place in the hills to the north of Mesopotamia. From there the agricultural revolution spread to the Nile and Indus Valleys. During this agricultural revolution, permanent villages, anticipated from experiences of sedentary life without agriculture, replaced a wandering existence. About 6,000 to 7,000 years ago, farming villages of the Near East and Middle East became cities. During the Neolithic age (ca. 5,700–3,200 BC), the first successful efforts to control the water flow were driven (such as dams and irrigation systems), owing to the food needs and were implemented in Mesopotamia and Egypt. Urban water supply and sanitation systems were dated at a later stage, in the Bronze Age (ca. 3,200–1,100 BC).

Hassan (1998) stated that ‘the secret of Egyptian civilisation was that it never lost sight of the past’; because of the unpredictability of the Nile River floods and the production of grains suggest order and stability. The ancient Egyptians depended upon the Nile not only for their livelihoods, but they also considered the Nile to be a divine force of the universe, to be respected and honoured if they wanted it to treat them favourably. The river annual rise and fall were likened to the rise and fall of the sun, each cycle being equally important to their lives, though both remaining a mystery. Since the Nile sources were unknown up until the 19th century, the Ancient Egyptians believed the watercourse to be a part of the great celestial ocean, or the sea that surrounds the whole world.
The first actual recorded evidence of water management was the mace head of King Scorpion (ca. 2725–2671 BC), the last of the pre-dynastic kings, which has been interpreted as the tool to initiate a ceremonial start to breaching the first dyke to allow water to inundate the fields or the ceremonial opening of a new canal. Mohenjo-Daro was a major urban centre of the Indus civilisation during the early Bronze Age, located about 400 km north of present-day Karachi, Pakistan. This planned city built around 2450 BC received water from at least 700 wells and had bathrooms in houses and sewers in streets as well as thermal baths (Jalter 1983). The Mesopotamians were not far behind. The Sumerians, during the Bronze Age, and other ancients that inhabited Ancient Mesopotamia provided an enormous amount of information about themselves through cuneiform tablets. Water provided by the Euphrates and Tigris Rivers shaped their societies. Elaborate irrigation systems were developed requiring continuous canal maintenance and construction of waterworks. Sedimentation in many canals was such a critical problem, that it was easier to abandon these canals and build new ones. One Sumerian epic indicates that humans were created specifically to dig irrigation ditches. The Sumerian epics also referred to the effect of uncontrolled human activity on the soil and environment, being interpreted as God’s curses, what we now understand as the environmental effects of intense irrigation (Mays 2008 and 2010).
Meanwhile, on the periphery of these areas (e.g. in Arabia and in the deserts of Iran, Pakistan and India), food production through farming and nomadic pastoralism, hunting and fishing, intensified as the various capacities of the desert environment came to be used more efficiently. It’s the creation of the oases: humankind’s most important realisation to survive in arid areas of the planet. An oasis is never a natural or casual creation. It is formed by small-scale local communities possessing environmental understanding specific to sites made habitable by applying techniques whose invention and preservation require considerable effort. The oases associate different skills and elements that already exist by using them in a new way. It is the fruit of the union of the environmental know-how of nomadic hunter-gatherers and herdsmen, with the water techniques of farmers (Laureano 2000).
The creation of the oases depends on the possession of hydraulic qualified expertise and the combined use of animals and plants suitable for the purpose, conditions that were first met in the early age of metals, around the third millennium BC. In this period nomadic populations that had remained on the margins of the age’s great city-building processes chose an agro-pastoral lifestyle and, driven by motives and pressures related to that choice, interacted, allied, established symbiosis with or assimilated other groups, opening to all the package of specific concepts that will lead to a leap in complexity and establish the oasis as a complete system for the support of lives and livelihoods. Through oases, these groups ensured physical and economic survival in hostile but mineral-rich areas that had become strategic in the Chalcolithic Period and Iron Age. It is in this context that was introduced the technology of catchments tunnels a factor that allows the enormous spread of oases. They are known in Iran as qanat or kareez, in Morocco as khettara and in Algeria as foggara. This technique has been in use for thousands of years, over a vast area extending from China to Persia, Spain, and even Latin America. As it is well known, catchment’s tunnels are underground channels consisting of verticals shafts connected at their bottom with a sub-horizontal tunnel bringing water from an aquiferous stratum. The underground tunnel has a slight downward slope useful for the water tapped to run down it and into the open air by gravity. That these techniques are not the result of an imposition by a central power, but expressions of the knowledge of local
populations, is demonstrated by their extreme variety and environmental adaptability, and by the diverse terminology used in each countries.
Other great civilisations such as the Minoans, located on modern-day Crete, flourished during the Bronze Age (ca. 3200–1100 BC). They had wonderful water and wastewater systems, such as those found in Knossos, Malia, Phaistos, Zakros, and other sites. These systems included aqueducts, cisterns, filtering systems, sedimentation basins, rainfall-harvesting systems, terracotta pipes for water supply and sewage, and sewerage and drainage systems. As the Minoans developed trade relations with the Greek mainland, they came to influence the Myceneans (ca. 1,600–1,100 BC). The contact of Mycenaean’s with Minoan Crete played a decisive role in the shaping and development of Mycenaean culture and the dissemination of Minoan water and wastewater technologies in the central Greece and other parts of Europe. While the two civilisations were almost opposites culturally, Mycenean and Minoan art and technology showed signs of cultural diffusion. The strong bond of Minoans with Myceneans ended when the Myceneans decided to invade Crete. After a brief period of Mycenean control the Minoan civilisation disappeared. The Myceneans were the most direct ancestors to the later Greeks. Mycenean culture and power reached its peak around 1300 BC. Then the cultural diffusion that resulted from trade contacts with the Hittite Empire and Egypt started to deteriorate. All these remarkable civilisations had one thing in common, even with the advanced
capabilities to provide water supply, these civilisations all collapsed. The interesting question is whether water resources sustainability was a significant component for their failure (Mays et al. 2007).
In the later archaic (750–500 BC) and classical (500–336 BC) periods, both historical sources and archaeological excavations provide evidence that water and wastewater technologies were advanced and widespread in Greece. Greeks built on the previous knowledge of hydraulics and water resources, but yet they also failed. The advancement of urban water technology and management is illustrated by the aqueduct of Samos (known as tunnel of Eupalinos) and the Peisistratean for Athens (Koutsoyiannis et al.
2008).
The Romans replaced the Greek rule in most locations, inherited the technologies and developed them further. In addition, the Romans substantially increased the application scale and implemented water projects in almost every large city (De Feo et al. 2011). The Greek and Roman water technologies are not only a cultural heritage but are the underpinning of modern achievements in water engineering and management practices. A few examples are the Hadrianic aqueduct in Athens and that in ancient Olympia known as Nymphaion of Herodes of Atticus which were constructed in the 2nd century A.D. Apparent characteristics of technologies and practices not only by the Greeks and Romans, but in many other ancient civilisations are durability and sustainability (De Feo et al. 2011). Nowadays, the popular but inaccurate image is that Roman aqueducts were elevated throughout their entire length on lines of arches, called arcades. Roman engineers, as their Greek predecessors, were very practical and therefore whenever possible the aqueduct followed a steady downhill course at or below ground level (Hansen 2006). As a matter of fact, on average 87% of the length of the Rome’s aqueduct system was underground (De Feo et al. 2011). The longest aqueduct in the Roman world was constructed in the Campania Region, in Southern Italy. It is the Augustan Aqueduct Serino-Naples-Miseno, which is not well known owing to there being no remains of spectacular bridges, but it was a masterpiece of engineering (De Feo and Napoli 2007).
Also, management practices were integrated, combining both large-scale and small-scale systems that have allowed cities to sustain for millennia. The durability of some of the systems that operated up to present times, as well as the support of the technologies and their scientific background by written documents enabled these technologies to be inherited by present societies despite regressions that have occurred through the centuries (e.g. in the Dark Ages). For instance, the spectacular ruins of Pompeii provide a clearer understanding of a Roman urban water distribution system, with similarities to a modern water distribution system. In fact, the ending point of a Roman aqueduct was the castellum divisorium which had the double function of serving as a disconnection between the aqueduct and the urban distribution network as well as dividing the water flow to various uses and/or geographical areas of the city. From the castellum divisorium, the three pipes conveyed the water to different parts of the city filling water towers: the castellum secondarium or castellum privatum (De Feo et al. 2011). It happened e.g. after the fall of the Roman Empire, when water sanitation and public health declined in Europe. Historical accounts tell of incredibly unsanitary conditions – heavily polluted water, human and animal wastes in the streets, and water thrown out of windows onto people in the streets. Consequently various epidemics ravaged Europe. During the same period, Islamic cultures, on the periphery of Europe, had religiously mandated high levels of personal hygiene, along with highly developed water supplies and adequate sanitation systems, which in several cases were the same old Greek and Roman facilities, preserved along the centuries (Mays 2008 and 2010).
There is no doubt that the ancient societies in Mesoamerica and the South-western United States did fail partially from the depletion of natural resources and climate change, at least particularly as related to water (Mays 2007). The period from about 150 AD to 900 AD, was the most remarkable in the development of Mesoamerica. During the Classic period the people of Mexico and the Maya area built civilisations comparable with the advanced civilisations in other parts of the world. In Mesoamerica those ancient urban civilisations developed in arid highlands where irrigation (hydraulic) agriculture allowed high population densities. In the tropical lowlands, however, there was a dependence on slash-and-burn (milpa) agriculture which kept the bulk of the population scattered in small hamlets. The non-urban lowland civilisation possibly resulted from responses to pressures set up by the hydraulic, urban civilisation. Teotihuacan (City of the Gods) in Mexico is the earliest example of highland urbanism (Mays 2010).
Different water and wastewater techniques were applied according to local conditions. For example, water supply in some Minoan settlements was dependent on springs and in others on a surface runoff or groundwater systems. Despite this diversity, common construction mastery seems to have been applied in several places in a relatively reduced time span. It can be suggested that a group of people living in prehistoric sites were aware of the principles of water relevant technologies. This suggests the existence of master craftsmen responsible for constructing and maintaining the water supply system of a community. They should also be in charge for the solution of some water related problems and were able to provide palaces and settlements with efficient, decentralised, environmental friendly and even sophisticated water supply and wastewater systems (Angelakis et al. 2011).
The link between traditional
knowledge and water resources sustainability
At the beginning of this new millennium a water crisis which threatens human’s existence in many parts of the world is being experienced. One might ask, how sustainable is it to live in a world where approximately 1.1 billion people lack safe drinking water, approximately 2.6 billion people lack adequate sanitation, and between 2 million and million people die annually from water-related diseases? In the attempt to solve this water crisis the concepts of water resources sustainability is creating concern. Water resources sustainability is the ability to use water in sufficient quantity and quality from the local to the global scale to meet the needs of humans and ecosystems for the present and the future to sustain life, and to protect humans from the damages brought about by natural and human-caused disasters that affect sustaining life (Mays 2007). The overall goal of water resources management must be water resources sustainability.
A component of water resources sustainability is the use of traditional knowledge, which constitutes the ancient knowledge of humanity (www.tkwb.org). The United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) provided the following definition of it: ‘Traditional knowledge consists of practical (instrumental) and normative knowledge concerning the ecological, socio-economic and cultural environment. Traditional knowledge originates from people and is transmitted to people by recognisable and experienced actors. It is systematic (inter-sector and holistic), experimental (empirical and practical), handed down from generation to generation and culturally enhanced. Such a kind of knowledge supports diversity and enhances and reproduces local resources.’
Where can traditional knowledge help in water resources sustainability to be implemented? Because water impacts so many aspects of our existence, there are many facets that must be considered in water resources sustainability. How do we overcome our modern day shortcomings and strive for water resources sustainability? Possibly one way is to study the past. The use of traditional knowledge may play a major role in solving some of the present day and future water resources sustainability issues, especially in developing parts of the world.
Many civilisations, which were great canters of power and culture, were built in locations that could not support the populations that developed. Now we find ourselves in similar situations in many places around the world. Arid zones cover 41.3% of the world’s land surface, corresponding to 34.7% of the planet’s inhabitants (2.1 billion people). Urban growth in these areas has been largely sustained by tapping remote water resources. Under the growing pressure of global warming, these resources are becoming increasingly insufficient and are at risk of complete collapse in the medium and long term. The situation of urban centres in arid regions is therefore critical. Only so much water flows in the world’s rivers: the concentration of resources in built-up areas has worked to the detriment of outlying lands, depriving flora and fauna of the water their vital processes require and hence triggering processes of soil degradation, erosion and desertification.
One might argue that if the ancient societies had our present day technologies, they would not have failed. However, even newer technologies, are not the answer for our present day problems; therefore, there is need to rely on traditional knowledge to tackle these problems.
What relevance does the failure or collapse of ancient civilisations have upon modern societies? Learning from the past and discovering the reasons for the success and failure of other societies seems very logical. We certainly are a much more advanced society than those of the ancient societies, but will we be able to overcome the obstacles to survival before us? The collapse of some civilisations may have been the result of the very processes that had been responsible for their success (e.g. the Mayans and Romans and others).
What relevance do ancient civilisations have upon modern day water resources sustainability? Or better yet, what can we learn from these ancient civilisations? Diamond (2005) proposed a five-point framework for the collapse of societies: (a) damage that people inadvertently inflict on their environment, (b) climate variability, (c) hostile neighbours, (d) decreased support by friendly neighbours, and (f) society’s responses to its problems. Three of these can relate to water resources sustainability.
Past, present and future cities
It is well accepted that urbanisation will continue to increase in the future and its impacts to the environment and especially to water and wastewater will continue to increase significantly. In the food-chain, production of meat, fish and dairy products consume 2.9-fold more water, 2.5-fold more energy, 13-fold more fertiliser and 1.4-fold more pesticides than the vegetarian ones. Thus, in the near future their production will account for more than 50% of the overall water consumption.
On the other hand, the old water and wastewater technologies developed in ancient civilisations, which are the underpinning of the modern achievements, may provide valuable insights for sustainable water and wastewater engineering and management practices in the future cities. Lessons to be learnt from the past could be relevant to (a) Design philosophy of water and wastewater projects (e.g. construction and operation period); (b) adaptation to the environment; (c) management (balancing water availability with the demand); (d) architectural aspects of the cities; (e) diet habits; and (f) sustainability, as a design principle (Koutsoyiannis et al. 2008; Mays 2010).
As an example, currently, engineers typically use a design period for structures of about 40 to 50 years as dictated by economic considerations. Sustainability, as a design principle, has entered the engineering lexicon only in the last decade. Naturally, it is difficult to estimate the design principles of ancient engineers but it is notable that several ancient works have operated for very long periods, some until recent times and other are still operative. For example, wastewater and stormwater drainage systems were functioning in Minoan settlements since the Bronze Age (Angelakis et al. 2005). These include bathrooms and other sanitary and purgatory facilities, as well as wastewater and storm sewer systems. In fact, the hydraulic and architectural function of sewer systems in palaces and cities are regarded as one of the salient characteristics of Minoan civilisation. They were so advanced that they can be successfully compared with their modern counterparts.
Epilogue (and outlook)
Many civilisations, which were great centres of power and culture, were built in locations that could not support the populations that developed. Now we find ourselves in similar situations in many places around the world. How do we balance the mega water projects with the methods of traditional knowledge? Koutsoyuannis et al. (2008) explored the legacies and lessons on urban water management learned from the ancient Greeks. They summarised the lessons learned as follows:
a) The meaning of sustainability in modern times should be re-evaluated in light of ancient public works and management practices. Technological developments based on sound engineering principles can have
extended useful lives.
b) Safety, with respect to water, is of critical importance in the sustainability of a population.

c) In water-short areas, development of cost-effective decentralised water and wastewater management program is essential.
d) Traditional knowledge could play important role for sustainable water supply in the future cities.
e) Climate variability is not a new phenomenon. People have always had to cope with the uncertainty natural phenomena and unpredictability of the environment. Precisely these conditions have shaped knowledge and adapted it locally to respond to adversity with appropriate techniques for capturing and distributing water, protecting soil, recycling and optimising energy use. These techniques constitute a great reserve of biological diversity and sustainable knowledge.
The use of traditional knowledge does not directly apply techniques of the past but instead, attempts ‘to understand the logic of this model of knowledge’ (Laureano 2007). Traditional knowledge allowed ancient societies to keep ecosystems in balance, carry out outstanding technical, artistic, and architectural work that has been universally admired. The use of traditional knowledge has been able to renew and adapt itself. Traditional knowledge incorporates innovation in a dynamic fashion, subject to the test of a long term, achieving local and environmental sustainability. An important subject for the sustainability in developing nations of the world is to research the implementation of methods of traditional knowledge for water supply. Many of these techniques may prove to be very valuable over the more conventional (more sophisticated) ones.
The ancients for the most part lived in harmony with nature and their environment, those that did not failed.
Their actions should be warnings to us, in other words the ancients have warned us. Today we do not live in harmony with nature and the environment.
Usually we define ‘ancient civilisations’ as those confined far away into past and, therefore, dated as ‘very old’. However, compared to the time scale they were the dawn of civilisation, their being ancient is more properly referred to as being ‘young civilisations’. If we relate the evolution of civilisation using the human life as the time scale, rather than centuries, it would be more immediate to recognise the ‘ancient civilisations’ like ‘young’ whereas the ‘modern civilisation’ as ‘old’. It is well known that young people have a greater risk attitude, compared to the elderly and thus the ‘first civilisations’ were more genuine, spontaneous, instinctive as well as they had a greater risk attitudes that leading them toward the construction of wonderful and fantastic works, better understanding the human needs and wishes. In the light of the water and wastewater technologies perspective, this is particularly true because water is the beginning of life as stated by (Aristotle, Metaphysics, 983 b.). Thus, we have to recover the ability to ‘think young’, to ‘think sustainable’!

El Agua y Saneamiento en las Civilizaciones de la Antigüedad

Prólogo
El rápido avance tecnológico del siglo XX generó cierto desdén por los logros del pasado. Las tecnologías hídricas de la antigüedad se consideraban muy atrasadas con respecto a las actuales -es decir, los grandes avances del siglo XX. Había muchos problemas no resueltos en relación con los principios de la gestión, tales como la descentralización de los procesos, la durabilidad de los proyectos hídricos, la efectividad en términos de costos, y cuestiones de sostenibilidad tales como la protección contra inundaciones y sequías. En el mundo en vías de desarrollo, estos problemas se vieron intensificados en un grado sin precedentes. Por otro lado, surgieron problemas nuevos tales como la contaminación de la superficie y de las napas. Naturalmente, la intensificación de los problemas no resueltos llevó a las sociedades a rever el pasado y a volver a investigar los logros exitosos de la época. Para su sorpresa, quienes intentaron esta retrospección en base a evidencia arqueológica, histórica y técnica, quedaron impresionados por dos hechos: la similitud de los principios con los actuales y el avanzado nivel de ingeniería hídrica y prácticas de gestión de la antigüedad (Koutsoyuannis et al. 2008; Mays 2008 y 2010).
Los principios de la tecnología hídrica de la actualidad tienen fundamentos que se remontan a trescientos o cuatrocientos años atrás. Estos logros incluyen tecnologías tales como las represas, pozos, cisternas, acueductos, baños, estructuras recreativas, e inclusive la reutilización del agua. Estas características y obras hidráulicas también reflejan un conocimiento científico avanzado, que por ejemplo permitió la construcción de túneles a partir de dos aberturas y el transporte de agua tanto por canales abiertos como por conductos cerrados bajo presión. Ciertamente, los desarrollos tecnológicos fueron impulsados por necesidades de uso eficiente de los recursos hídricos naturales para que las civilizaciones sean más resistentes a los elementos naturales destructivos y para mejorar los niveles de vida. Respecto de esto último, ciertas civilizaciones desarrollaron un estilo de vida avanzado, cómodo e higiénico, según evidencian los baños públicos y privados y los inodoros con descarga, que pueden compararse con nuestras instalaciones actuales y que fueron re-establecidos en Europa y Norteamérica a principios del último siglo (Angelakis et al. 2005).
Con la creciente concientización a nivel mundial de la importancia de la gestión de los recursos hídricos en las civilizaciones de la antigüedad, en 2005 se estableció el Grupo de Especialistas IWA en Aguas Residuales en las Civilizaciones de la Antigüedad (WWAC), y hasta el momento han tenido lugar dos Simposios Internacionales IWA sobre Tecnologías de Agua y Saneamiento en las Civilizaciones de la Antigüedad en 2006 y 2009 en Iraklion, Grecia y en Bari, Italia respectivamente. Además, se organizará un 3er Simposio IWA en Estambul, Turquía, del 22 al 24 de marzo de 2012. Con la experiencia adquirida a partir de estos Simposios, cabe destacar que los participantes provienen de diversas disciplinas, fundamentalmente de las ciencias hídricas, la historia y la arqueología; pero también incluyendo a la ingeniería, ciencias de la vida, medio ambiente y salud, biología, geociencias, y otras. La cobertura geográfica de las características e instalaciones expuestas es sumamente amplia, principalmente en el mundo del Mediterráneo. Sin embargo, se han incluido algunas otras civilizaciones de otros lugares del mundo, tales como el sudoeste de Estados Unidos, Sudamérica y Asia. Los temas abarcan desde los tiempos prehistóricos a la Edad Media y a los tiempos modernos, y se presentan de manera coherente y crítica.
Los principios y prácticas de la gestión hídrica de las civilizaciones de la antigüedad no son tan conocidos como otros logros de las civilizaciones de la antigüedad, como la poesía, la filosofía, la ciencia, la política y las artes visuales. Hay mucho que aprender de las tecnologías y prácticas de la antigüedad, por lo cual el Grupo de Especialistas en Aguas Residuales en las Civilizaciones de la Antigüedad también se ocupa del desarrollo de las tecnologías hídricas a través de los siglos en diversas partes del mundo. Se consideran algunos estudios de casos específicos. A fin de poner en perspectiva los antiguos principios y prácticas de la gestión hídrica, es importante examinar su relevancia para los tiempos modernos y cosechar algunos aprendizajes. Además, se analiza la relevancia de las obras de la antigüedad en términos de la evolución de la tecnología, los avances tecnológicos, la seguridad nacional, y los principios de la gestión. Finalmente, se debería considerar una evaluación comparativa de las diversas tecnologías entre civilizaciones.
La tecnología del agua y saneamiento de la antigüedad
El hombre ha pasado gran parte de su historia como un ser que debía cazar y procurar su propio alimento. No fue hasta en los últimos nueve o diez mil años que descubrió cómo desarrollar sus propios cultivos agrícolas y domar animales. Esta revolución probablemente ocurrió por primera vez en las colinas del norte de la Mesopotamia. A partir de allí, la revolución agrícola se dispersó hacia los Valles del Nilo y el Indo. Durante esta revolución agrícola, los pueblos estables -anticipados por la experiencia de vida sedentaria sin agricultura- reemplazaron la existencia errante. Hace alrededor de 6000 o 7000 años, los pueblos agrícolas del Cercano Oriente y el Medio Oriente se convirtieron en ciudades. Durante la era neolítica (ca. 5,700–3,200 AC), los primeros esfuerzos exitosos por controlar el caudal de agua fueron impulsados (como las represas y los sistemas de irrigación) por las necesidades alimenticias e implementados en la Mesopotamia y en Egipto. Los sistemas urbanos de agua y saneamiento datan de una etapa posterior, la Edad de Bronce (ca. 3.200-1.100 AC).
Hassan (1998) afirmó que “el secreto de la civilización egipcia radicó en que nunca perdió de vista el pasado.” Frente a la naturaleza imprevisible del Río Nilo, las inundaciones y la producción de granos sugieren orden y estabilidad. Los antiguos egipcios dependían del Nilo no solo porque constituía su medio de subsistencia sino también porque consideraban que el Nilo era una fuerza divina del universo, que debían respetar y honrar si querían ser tratados favorablemente. Se relacionaba la crecida y la bajada anual del río con la salida y la puesta del sol, siendo cada ciclo igualmente importante para sus vidas -aunque ambos seguían siendo un misterio. Dado que las fuentes del Nilo no se conocieron hasta el siglo XIX, los Egipcios de la Antigüedad creían que el curso de agua era parte del gran océano celestial, o el mar que rodea al mundo entero.
La primera evidencia registrada de gestión hídrica fue la cabeza de maza del Rey Escorpión (ca. 2725–2671 AC), el último de los reyes pre-dinásticos, que ha sido interpretada como la herramienta utilizada para dar inicio a un comienzo ceremonial de apertura del primer dique para permitir que el agua inundara los campos o la apertura ceremonial de un nuevo canal. Mohenjo-Daro fue un importante centro urbano de la civilización del Indo durante los primeros tiempos de la Edad de Bronce, ubicado unos 400 km al norte de la actual Karachi, en Pakistán. Esta ciudad planificada, construida alrededor del 2450 AC, recibía agua de al menos 700 pozos, y tenía baños en las viviendas y cloacas en las calles, además de baños termales (Jalter 1983). Los Mesopotámicos no les quedaban en zaga. Los sumerios de la Edad de Bronce y otros pueblos de la Antigüedad que habitaban la Mesopotamia en la Edad Antigua, proporcionaron enormes cantidades de información sobre sí mismos a través de tabletas cuneiformes. El agua provista por los ríos Éufrates y Tigris moldeaba sus sociedades. Se desarrollaron elaborados sistemas de irrigación que requerían un continuo mantenimiento del canal y construcción de redes de agua. La sedimentación en muchos canales era un problema tan crítico, que era más fácil abandonar esos canales y construir otros nuevos. Una épica sumeria indica que el ser humano fue creado específicamente para cavar diques de irrigación. Las épicas sumerias también se referían al efecto de la actividad incontrolada del hombre sobre el suelo y el medio ambiente, lo cual se interpretaba como las maldiciones de Dios y que hoy entendemos como los efectos ambientales de la irrigación intensa (Mays 2008 y 2010).
Mientras tanto, en la periferia de dichas áreas (por ejemplo, en Arabia y en los desiertos de Irán, Pakistán e India), se intensificó la elaboración de alimentos a través de la agricultura y la ganadería nómada, la caza y la pesca, en la medida en que las diversas capacidades del entorno del desierto se iban utilizando de manera más eficiente. Es la creación del oasis: la obra más importante de la humanidad para sobrevivir en zonas áridas del planeta. Un oasis nunca es una creación natural o casual. Se forma en comunidades locales de pequeña escala con un entendimiento ambiental específico de sitios que se tornan habitables por medio de la aplicación de técnicas cuya invención y preservación requieren considerable esfuerzo. Los oasis asocian distintas habilidades y elementos que ya existen, utilizándolos de manera innovadora. Es el fruto de la unión del conocimiento ambiental de los cazadores-recolectores y pastores nómades, con las técnicas hídricas de los agricultores (Laureano 2000).
La creación del oasis depende de que se tengan conocimientos hidráulicos calificados y del uso combinado de animales y plantas adecuados para tal fin -condiciones que se cumplieron en primer lugar en la edad temprana de los metales, alrededor del tercer milenio AC. En este período, las poblaciones nómades que habían permanecido al margen de los grandes procesos de construcción de ciudades de la época, eligieron un estilo de vida agro-ganadero, e impulsados por motivos y presiones relativos a dicha elección, interactuaron, se aliaron, establecieron una simbiosis con, o asimilaron a otros grupos, abriendo a todos el paquete de conceptos específicos que generará un salto en complejidad y establecerá al oasis como un sistema integral en apoyo de la vida y las formas de subsistencia. A través del oasis, estos grupos aseguraron la supervivencia física y económica en áreas hostiles pero ricas en minerales que se habían tornado estratégicas en el Período Calcolítico y la Edad de Hierro. Es en este contexto que se introdujo la tecnología de túneles de captación -un factor que permite la enorme diseminación de los oasis. Se los conoce en Irán como ganat o kareez, en Marruecos como khettara, y en Argelia como foggara. Esta técnica ha sido utilizada durante miles de años, en una vasta zona que se extiende de China a Persia, España, e inclusive a América Latina. Como es sabido, los túneles de captación son canales subterráneos que consisten en pozos verticales conectados en su base con un túnel sub-horizontal que trae agua desde un estrato acuífero. El túnel subterráneo posee una leve inclinación hacia abajo que sirve para que el agua corra hacia el cielo abierto por gravedad. El hecho de que estas técnicas no son el resultado de la imposición de un poder central sino expresiones del conocimiento de las poblaciones locales, queda demostrado por su extrema variedad y adaptabilidad ambiental, y por la diversa terminología utilizada en cada país.
Otras grandes civilizaciones como los minoicos, ubicados en la Creta de la actualidad, florecieron durante la Era de Bronce (ca. 3200-1100 AC). Poseían sistemas de agua y saneamiento extraordinarios, como los hallados en Knossos, Malia, Phaistos, Zakros, y otros lugares. Estos sistemas incluían acueductos, cisternas, sistemas de filtrado, cuencas de sedimentación, sistemas de cosecha de agua de lluvia, caños de terracota para el suministro de agua y saneamiento, y sistemas de saneamiento y drenaje. Dado que los minoicos desarrollaron relaciones comerciales con la Grecia continental, llegaron a influenciar a los micenas (ca. 1600-1100 AC). El contacto de los micenas con la Creta de los minoicos desempeñó un papel decisivo a la hora de moldear y desarrollar la cultura micénica y la difusión de las tecnologías de agua y saneamiento minoicas en la Grecia central y otras partes de Europa. Si bien las dos civilizaciones eran prácticamente opuestas a nivel cultural, el arte y la tecnología micena y minoica mostraron signos de difusión cultural. El fuerte lazo de los minoicos y los micenas finalizó cuando los micenas decidieron invadir Creta. Luego de un breve período de control de los micenas, la civilización minoica desapareció. Los micenas fueron los ancestros más directos de los Griegos posteriores. La cultura y el poder micénicos alcanzaron su pico máximo alrededor del 1300 AC. Luego, la difusión cultural surgida de los contactos comerciales con el Imperio Hitita y Egipto, comenzó a deteriorarse. Todas estas notables civilizaciones tuvieron algo en común: aún con las avanzadas capacidades de lograr el suministro de agua, todas estas civilizaciones colapsaron. Lo interesante es preguntarnos si la sostenibilidad de los recursos hídricos fue o no un componente significativo de su fracaso (Mays et al. 2007).
En los períodos arcaico (750–500 AC) y clásico (500–336 AC) posteriores, tanto las fuentes históricas como las excavaciones arqueológicas proporcionan evidencia de que las tecnologías de agua y saneamiento eran avanzadas y estaban diseminadas en todo Grecia. Los griegos se basaron en los conocimientos previos de hidráulica y recursos hídricos, pero sin embargo también fracasaron. El avance de la tecnología y la gestión hídrica urbana se evidencia claramente en el acueducto de Samos (conocido como el túnel de Eupalinos) y el Peisistratean para Atenas (Koutsoyiannis et al. 2008).
Los romanos reemplazaron el dominio griego en la mayoría de los lugares, heredaron sus tecnologías y las desarrollaron aún más. Además, los romanos elevaron sustancialmente la escala de aplicación e implementaron proyectos hídricos en casi todas las grandes ciudades (De Feo et al. 2011). La tecnología hídrica griega y romana no solo constituyen una herencia cultural, sino que además constituyen el sustento de los logros modernos en ingeniería hídrica y prácticas de gestión. Algunos ejemplos son el acueducto Adriánico de Atenas y el de la antigua Olimpia conocido como Ninfaion de Herodes Atticus, que fueron construidos en el siglo II AC. Las características evidentes de las tecnologías y prácticas no solo de los griegos y romanos sino de muchas otras civilizaciones de la antigüedad, son la durabilidad y la sostenibilidad (De Feo et al. 2011). Actualmente, la imagen popular pero inexacta es que los acueductos romanos se elevaban en toda su extensión sobre líneas de arcos llamadas arcadas. Los ingenieros romanos, así como sus predecesores griegos, eran muy prácticos; y por ende, siempre que era posible el acueducto seguía un curso permanente con inclinación hacia abajo a nivel del suelo o más abajo (Hansen 2006). De hecho, un 87% promedio de toda la extensión del sistema de acueductos de Roma era subterráneo (De Feo et al. 2011). El acueducto romano de mayor extensión fue construido en la Región de Campania, en el sur de Italia. Es el Acueducto Augustano Serino-Nápoles-Miseno, que no es muy conocido porque no hay restos de puentes espectaculares, pero fue una obra maestra de ingeniería (De Feo y Napoli 2007).
Por otro lado, las prácticas de gestión eran integrales, combinando los sistemas de pequeña y gran escala, lo cual ha permitido sostenibilidad en las ciudades durante milenios. La durabilidad de algunos de los sistemas que han operado hasta nuestros tiempos, así como el apoyo de las tecnologías y sus antecedentes científicos a través de documentos escritos, permitieron que estas tecnologías fueran heredadas por las sociedades actuales a pesar de las regresiones que han ocurrido a través de los siglos (por ejemplo, en las Edades Oscuras). Por ejemplo, las espectaculares ruinas de Pompeya transmiten un claro entendimiento de un sistema urbano de distribución de agua, con similitudes con un sistema de distribución de agua moderno. De hecho, el punto de finalización de un acueducto romano era el castellum divisorium, que tenía la doble función de servir como desconexión entre el acueducto y la red de distribución urbana y también de dividir el caudal de agua para diversos usos y/o áreas geográficas de la ciudad. Desde el castellum divisorium, las tres tuberías transportaban el agua hacia diferentes partes de la ciudad, llenando torres de agua: el castellum secondarium o castellum privatum (De Feo et al. 2011). Sucedió, por ejemplo, luego de la caída del Imperio Romano, cuando el agua y saneamiento así como la salud pública se deterioraron en Europa. Los registros históricos narran condiciones increíblemente poco sanitarias -agua fuertemente contaminada, residuos humanos y animales en las calles, y agua arrojada desde las ventanas a la gente de la calle. Entonces, varias epidemias asolaron Europa. Durante el mismo período, las culturas islámicas -en la periferia de Europa- exhibían altos niveles de higiene personal por mandato religioso, junto con sistemas de suministro de agua y saneamiento adecuado altamente desarrollados, que en muchos casos eran los mismos viejos sistemas griegos y romanos que habían sido preservados a través de los siglos (Mays 2008 y 2010).
No hay duda de que las sociedades antiguas de Meso América y del sudoeste de Estados Unidos fracasaron en parte a raíz del agotamiento de los recursos naturales y el cambio climático, al menos en particular en lo referido al agua (Mays 2007). El período comprendido entre el año 150 AC y 900 AC fue el más notable en el desarrollo de Meso América. Durante el período clásico, los habitantes de México y el área maya construyeron civilizaciones comparables con las civilizaciones avanzadas de otros lugares del mundo. En Meso América, aquellas civilizaciones urbanas de la antigüedad se desarrollaron en tierras altas áridas donde la agricultura de irrigación (hidráulica) permitía altas densidades de población. Sin embargo, en las tierras bajas tropicales existía una dependencia de la agricultura de tala y quema (milpa), que mantenía al grueso de la población disperso en pequeñas aldeas. La civilización no-urbana de las tierras bajas posiblemente surgió en respuesta a las presiones impuestas por la civilización urbana hidráulica. Teotihuacan (Ciudad de los Dioses), en México, es el ejemplo más antiguo de urbanismo en las tierras altas (Mays 2010).
Distintas técnicas de agua y saneamiento fueron aplicadas en concordancia con las condiciones locales. Por ejemplo, el suministro de agua en algunos establecimientos minoicos dependía de los manantiales, y en otros, del escurrimiento de superficie o sistemas de agua subterránea. A pesar de esta diversidad, parece haberse aplicado una maestría de construcción común en diversos lugares en un lapso de tiempo relativamente reducido. Se podría sugerir que un grupo de personas que vivían en sitios prehistóricos tenían conocimiento de los principios de las tecnologías hídricas relevantes. Esto sugiere la existencia de maestros artesanos, responsables de la construcción y mantenimiento de los sistemas de suministro de agua de una comunidad. También deberían estar encargados de la solución de algunos problemas relacionados con el agua, y eran capaces de proveer en palacios y asentamientos sistemas de agua y saneamiento eficientes, descentralizados, amigables al medio ambiente y hasta sofisticados (Angelakis et al. 2011).
El vínculo entre el conocimiento tradicional y la sostenibilidad de los recursos hídricos
Al inicio de este nuevo milenio, se está experimentando una crisis hídrica que amenaza la existencia del hombre en muchas partes del mundo. Uno podría preguntar qué tan sostenibles es vivir en un mundo donde aproximadamente mil cien millones de personas carecen de agua potable segura, alrededor de dos mil seiscientas personas carecen de un adecuado saneamiento, y entre 2 y 5 millones de personas mueren anualmente por enfermedades relacionadas con el agua. En un intento por resolver esta crisis hídrica, los conceptos de sostenibilidad de los recursos hídricos están generando inquietud. La sostenibilidad de los recursos hídricos es la capacidad de utilizar agua en suficiente cantidad y calidad desde la escala local hasta la mundial para satisfacer las necesidades del hombre y los ecosistemas para que el presente y el futuro puedan sustentar la vida, y para proteger al ser humano de los daños causados por los desastres naturales y otros provocados por el hombre que afectan la vida sostenibles (Mays 2007). La meta global de la gestión de los recursos hídricos debe ser la sostenibilidad de los recursos hídricos.
Un componente de la sostenibilidad de los recursos hídricos es el uso del conocimiento tradicional, que es el antiguo conocimiento de la humanidad (www.tkwb.org). La Convención de las Naciones Unidas para Combatir la Desertificación (UNCCD) proporcionó la siguiente definición del mismo: “El conocimiento tradicional consta del conocimiento práctico (instrumental) y normativo referido al entorno ecológico, socio-económico y cultural. El conocimiento tradicional tiene origen en la gente y se transmite a otra gente por medio de actores reconocibles y experimentados. Es sistemático (entre sectores y holístico), experimental (empírico y práctico), transmitido de generación en generación, y culturalmente mejorado. Este tipo de conocimiento respalda la diversidad y mejora y reproduce los recursos locales.”
¿Dónde puede el conocimiento tradicional ayudar a implementar la sostenibilidad de los recursos hídricos? Dado que el agua impacta en tantos aspectos de nuestra existencia, existen muchas facetas que deben ser consideradas en la sostenibilidad de los recursos hídricos. ¿De qué manera podemos sortear las deficiencias de nuestros tiempos modernos y luchar por la sostenibilidad de los recursos hídricos? Posiblemente una forma es estudiar el pasado. El uso del conocimiento tradicional puede desempeñar un rol importante a la hora de solucionar algunas de las cuestiones de sostenibilidad de los recursos hídricos presentes y futuras, en especial en los países del mundo en vías de desarrollo.
Muchas civilizaciones, que eran grandes centros de poder y cultura, fueron construidas en lugares que no podían sostener las poblaciones que se desarrollaron. Ahora nos encontramos en situaciones similares en muchos lugares del mundo. Las zonas áridas cubren el 41.3% de la superficie terrestre del mundo, que corresponde al 34.7% de los habitantes del mundo (dos mil cien millones de personas). El crecimiento urbano en estas áreas se ha sustentado largamente por medio de la explotación de los recursos hídricos remotos. Bajo la creciente presión del calentamiento global, estos recursos están siendo cada vez más insuficientes y están en riesgo de un colapso total en el mediano y largo plazo. Por consiguiente, la situación de los centros urbanos en regiones áridas es crítica. Este es el caudal de agua que fluye en los ríos del mundo: la concentración de recursos en áreas construidas ha trabajado en detrimento de las tierras periféricas, privando a la flora y fauna del agua requerida por sus procesos vitales, y por ende disparando procesos de degradación del suelo, erosión y desertificación.
Se podría argumentar que si las sociedades de la antigüedad hubieran contado con nuestras actuales tecnologías, no hubieran fracasado. Sin embargo, las tecnologías aún más nuevas no son la respuesta a nuestros problemas actuales; por ende, debemos recurrir a los conocimientos tradicionales para abordar estos problemas.
¿Qué relevancia tiene el fracaso o colapso de las civilizaciones antiguas en las sociedades modernas? Aprender del pasado y descubrir las razones del éxito y del fracaso de otras sociedades parece muy lógico. Ciertamente somos una sociedad mucho más avanzada que las sociedades de la antigüedad, pero ¿podremos superar los obstáculos a la supervivencia que nos toca enfrentar? El colapso de algunas civilizaciones puede haber sido el resultado de los mismos procesos que habían sido responsables de su éxito (por ejemplo, los mayas y los romanos, y otros).
¿Qué relevancia tienen las civilizaciones de la antigüedad en la sostenibilidad de los recursos hídricos de hoy en día? O mejor dicho, ¿qué podemos aprender de estas civilizaciones antiguas? Diamond (2005) propuso un marco de cinco puntos en relación con el colapso de las sociedades: (a) el daño que la gente involuntariamente inflige en su medio ambiente, (b) la variabilidad del clima, (c) los vecinos hostiles, (d) el menor apoyo de vecinos amigables, y (e) las respuestas de la sociedad a sus problemas. Tres de estos puntos se relacionan con la sostenibilidad de los recursos hídricos.
Ciudades del pasado, presente y futuro
Es sabido que la urbanización seguirá avanzando en el futuro y sus impactos sobre el medio ambiente -y en especial sobre el agua y el saneamiento- seguirán aumentando de manera significativa. En la cadena alimenticia, la producción de carne, pescado y lácteos consume 2.9 veces más agua, 2.5 veces más energía, 13 veces más fertilizantes y 1.4 veces más pesticidas que la agrícola. Por lo tanto, en el futuro inmediato, su producción dará cuenta de más del 50% del consumo general de agua.
Por otro lado, las viejas tecnologías de agua y saneamiento desarrolladas en las civilizaciones de la antigüedad -que son el sustento de los logros modernos- pueden proporcionar valiosas introspecciones para la gestión y las prácticas sostenibles de ingeniería del agua y saneamiento en las ciudades del futuro. Los aprendizajes a incorporar del pasado podrían ser relevantes para (a) diseñar la filosofía de los proyectos de agua y saneamiento (por ejemplo, período de construcción y operación); (b) la adaptación al medio ambiente; (c) la gestión (equilibrio de la oferta y la demanda de agua); (d) los aspectos arquitectónicos de las ciudades; (e) los hábitos dietarios; y (f) la sostenibilidad, como principio de diseño (Koutsoyiannis et al. 2008; Mays 2010).
A título ilustrativo, actualmente los ingenieros utilizan típicamente un período de diseño para las estructuras de alrededor de 40 o 50 años según dictan las consideraciones económicas. La sostenibilidad, como principio de diseño, recién ingresó en el léxico de la ingeniería en la última década. Naturalmente, es difícil estimar los principios de diseño de los ingenieros de la antigüedad, pero es notable que diversas obras de la antigüedad hayan operado durante períodos sumamente prolongados -algunos hasta tiempos recientes, y otros aún están operativos. Por ejemplo, los sistemas cloacales y pluviales han estado funcionando en los asentamientos minoicos desde la Edad de Bronce (Angelakis et al. 2005). Los mismos incluyen baños y otras instalaciones sanitarias, así como redes cloacales y pluviales. De hecho, la función hidráulica y arquitectónica de los sistemas cloacales en palacios y ciudades es considerada como una de las características salientes de la civilización minoica. Eran tan avanzados que pueden compararse adecuadamente con sus contrapartes modernas.
Epílogo (y perspectiva)
Muchas civilizaciones, que eran grandes centros de poder y cultura, fueron construidas en lugares que no podían soportar las poblaciones que se desarrollaron. Hoy en día nos encontramos en situaciones similares en muchos lugares del mundo. ¿Cómo equilibramos los megaproyectos hídricos con los métodos de conocimiento tradicional? Koutsoyuannis et al. (2008) analizó los legados y aprendizajes sobre gestión hídrica urbana que dejaron los griegos de la antigüedad. Los resumieron de la siguiente manera:
a) El significado de sostenibilidad en tiempos modernos debe ser re-evaluado a la luz de las obras públicas y las prácticas de gestión de la antigüedad. Los desarrollos tecnológicos basados en sólidos principios de ingeniería pueden haber extendido la vida útil.
b) La seguridad, en cuanto se refiere al agua, es de vital importancia en la sostenibilidad de una población.

c) En áreas con escasez de agua, resulta esencial el desarrollo de un programa de gestión de agua y saneamiento descentralizado y efectivo en términos de costos.
d) El conocimiento tradicional podría desempeñar un papel importante para el suministro de agua sostenible en las ciudades del futuro.
e) La variabilidad climática no es un fenómeno reciente. La gente siempre tuvo que lidiar con la incertidumbre de los fenómenos naturales y el carácter imprevisible del medio ambiente. Precisamente estas condiciones han moldeado el conocimiento y lo han adaptado a nivel local para responder a la adversidad con técnicas apropiadas para capturar y distribuir el agua, protegiendo el suelo, reciclando y optimizando el uso de la energía. Estas técnicas constituyen una importante reserva de diversidad biológica y conocimiento sostenibles.
El uso del conocimiento tradicional no aplica directamente las técnicas del pasado sino que por el contrario, pretende “comprender la lógica de este modelo de conocimiento” (Laureano 2007). El conocimiento tradicional permitió a las sociedades de la antigüedad mantener los ecosistemas en equilibrio, llevar a cabo obras técnicas, artísticas, y arquitectónicas notables que han sido admiradas a nivel mundial. El uso del conocimiento tradicional ha logrado renovarse y adaptarse. El conocimiento tradicional incorpora la innovación de modo dinámico, sujeto al ensayo de un largo plazo, alcanzando la sostenibilidad local y ambiental. Un tema importante para la sostenibilidad en los países en vías de desarrollo es investigar la implementación de métodos de conocimiento tradicional para el suministro de agua. Muchas de estas técnicas pueden resultar más valiosas que las más convencionales (y sofisticadas).
Las civilizaciones de la antigüedad, en su mayoría, vivían en armonía con la naturaleza y con el medio ambiente -las que no fracasaron. Sus actos deben servirnos de advertencia; en otras palabras, la antigüedad nos ha advertido. Hoy en día no se vive en armonía con la naturaleza y el medio ambiente.
Habitualmente definimos a las “civilizaciones antiguas” como aquellas confinadas a los tiempos pasados; y por ende, datadas como "muy viejas". Sin embargo, comparadas con la escala temporal, fueron el amanecer de la civilización. Más que referirnos a tiempos antiguos, deberíamos referirnos a “civilizaciones jóvenes”. Si relacionamos la evolución de la civilización utilizando como escala temporal la vida del hombre, más que medir en siglos, sería más inmediato reconocer a las "civilizaciones antiguas" como "jóvenes" mientras que la "civilización moderna” se considera “vieja”. Es sabido que los jóvenes tienen una actitud de mayor riesgo comparado con los mayores, y por ende las "primeras civilizaciones" eran más genuinas, espontáneas, instintivas, y tenían actitudes de mayor riesgo que las condujeron hacia la construcción de obras maravillosas y fantásticas, y a un mejor entendimiento de las necesidades y deseos del ser humano. A la luz de la perspectiva de las tecnologías de agua y saneamiento, esto es particularmente cierto ya que el agua es el principio de la vida -tal como lo expresó Aristóteles (Aristóteles, Metafísica, 983 AC). Por consiguiente, debemos recuperar la habilidad de ‘pensar joven’, ¡de ‘pensar sostenibles’!
