Gotoh sensei, one of my acupuncture teachers in Japan and given to quasi-‐scientific
reasoning, gave us this simple formula to ponder during a lesson:
Reaction = treatment + sensitivity.
He went on to explain what was implied by this: the same reaction can be obtained by carefully gauging the sensitivity of the patient and calibrating the intensity of the treatment accordingly.
Some of us are born with thick hides. Others are born sensitive. Still others are just wide open. Such people are the ones we call gifted, psychic or clairvoyant. Nowadays they are sometimes called empaths because their power of empathy is so strong that they often feel what another person is experiencing but is not yet consciously aware of.
The lucky ones receive guidance from a loving and nurturing relative or friend or even a
culture which knows, appreciates and values the talent available. Most do not.
Our Western cultures, in particular, tend to cause such individuals to repress or hide and in some cases completely disable their abilities. No guidance is offered; instead every attempt is made in the name of religion, science and common sense to eradicate all
traces of the anomoly. One learns to "fit in", however painful the process and
disempowering the end result.
In fact the very act of disowning one's gift or ability can lead to serious illness -‐ not
surprising if we consider the act of disowning as a shutting down of a significant percentage of the energy available to that individual. Imagine for a moment the crippling effect on a human being of disabling a portion of say, the immune or hormone system
and we can envisage what it might mean for a person having to turn off their gift of
feeling, sensing or seeing types of energy which others among us cannot access.
We can even compare this to the effects of anti-‐depressant medication on people complaining of stress and anxiety. What seems to happen is that a portion of the entire response system is disabled, thus allowing the individual to cope with the level of stimulus coming in from the outside world. This effect is achieved however, at the expence of many levels of sensitivity throughout the organism. The person in question becomes to a significant degree anaesthetized. A kind of general cushioning effect comes into being, an effect which reduces many of the normal functions we associate with perception. The person becomes partially shut down.
This can be highly desireable for a certain period of time while rest and recuperation are
facilitated, especially if dosage is carefully managed between medical practitioner and
patient in collaboration. However, if we consider the cost in terms of increased dullness and non responsiveness -‐ to say nothing of metabollic stagnation and subsequent weight gain -‐ we might question the long term wisdom of this practice.
Increasingly, I have found that people coming for treatments learn to move back into their abilities, and embrace them for the powerful tools they are. Oriental medicine provides a wonderfully clear and thoroughly earthed framework for the re-‐development
of these gifts and abilities, which then become avenues for creative growth instead of
toxic burdens.
Some readers will begin to sense a kindred feeling here. What many of us actually go through on our healing journey is a kind of re-‐sensitisation, and here I mean either as patient or therapist or even as a support person to one going through the process. This is sometimes very pleasant, sometimes absolutely wonderful, powerful and liberating. Sometimes, however, it is very, very painful indeed.
Personally I belong to the fortunate group of individuals who experience healing -‐ in the form of both therapy and education -‐ as a series of joyful and liberating discoveries and even more so, re-‐dicoveries. Memories flood back, experiences re-‐occur, sometimes at breakneck speed, and doors long closed swing open. Some readers will recognise this as being similar or identical to their own experience.
There are, however, those whose experience of healing is characterised by pain. These are the people we the practitioners of Oriental medicine have unique gifts to offer. The streams and structures of our traditions place a soothing and supporting frame around experiences long suffered and harshly repressed.
The associative trails of the five elements and in particular the five spirits give us accurate tools for sorting, annotating and characterising aspects of behaviour so that these empaths can begin to put their experiences into context, place them on a map and chart reference points for the re-‐structuring of thoughts, feelings and spiritual insights.
Above and beyond this we have the possibility to contribute to a wholesale recalibration of the boundaries concerning sensitivity. People who react to unkindness, brusque behaviour and provocative insults are commonly encouraged to be less sensitive -‐ as if sensitivity in itself were a negative and destructive property.
Surely this is not the case. Sensitivity exists for a reason. One of our tasks might be to help those who are in possession of an uncommonly high degree of sensitivity to embrace it as a strength rather than shun it as a badge of debilitating weakness.
Properly managed, sensitivity is a tool for navigating unchartered depths and exploring
heights rarely flown to. Part of our responsibility as practitioners might then be to reclaim our own sensitivity, hone it and raise it to new levels so that we also become empaths operating at higher levels of sensitivity, with access to our own special gifts and powers of perception.
Sensitive people can become powerful agents of positive change if they are given an
empathic context to stabilise and flourish in. Shall we become their pillars of support?

Continuó explicando lo que esto implicaba: una misma reacción puede ser obtenida evaluando cuidadosamente la sensibilidad del paciente y calibrando la intensidad del tratamiento en consecuencia.
Algunos nacemos con una gruesa piel. Otros nacen sensitivos. Incluso hay otros que simplemente están abiertos a todo. Esas personas son las que llamamos prodigiosas, médiums o clarividentes. Hoy en día, a veces se les llama empáticos porque su poder de empatía es tan fuerte que a menudo sienten lo que otra persona está experimentando pero aún no es consciente de ello.
Hay afortunados que son guiados con cuidado y amor por un amigo o familiar, o incluso por una cultura que sabe, aprecia y valora el talento de las personas. La mayoría no tienen esa suerte.
Nuestras culturas Occidentales, en particular, tienden a crear individuos que reprimen, esconden y en algunos casos inutilizan completamente sus habilidades. No se ofrece una orientación. Si acaso, se hace en nombre de la religión, ciencia y sentido común con el fin de erradicar cualquier vestigio de anomalía. Uno aprende a “encajar”, aunque el proceso sea doloroso y el resultado final decepcionante.
De hecho, el mismo acto de desposesión de nuestro propio talento o don puede llevarnos a una seria enfermedad –no es sorprendente, si consideramos el acto de desposesión como un apagón de un importante porcentaje de energía disponible en cada individuo. Imagina por un momento el abrumador efecto en un ser humano al desactivar una parte, digamos, del sistema inmunitario u hormonal. Así podremos visualizar lo que podría significar para una persona tener que eliminar su don o sensibilidad para captar ciertos tipos de energía a la que otros no podemos acceder.
Podemos incluso comparar esto con los efectos de los medicamentos antidepresivos en la gente que se queja de estrés y ansiedad. Lo que parece ocurrir es que una parte del sistema de respuesta es inhabilitado, permitiendo que el individuo pueda afrontar el nivel de estímulos que llegan desde el mundo exterior. Sin embargo, este efecto se consigue a costa de varios niveles de sensibilidad en todo el organismo. La persona en cuestión queda anestesiada de forma considerable. Una especie de efecto general de atenuación aparece, un efecto que reduce muchas de las funciones normales que asociamos con la percepción. La persona queda parcialmente apagada.
Esto puede ser altamente deseable durante un cierto periodo de tiempo para facilitar el descanso y la recuperación, especialmente si la dosis se administra con cuidado en una colaboración médico-paciente. Sin embargo, si consideramos el coste en términos de embotamiento y no responsividad –por no hablar del estancamiento metabólico y la consecuente ganancia de peso- podríamos entonces cuestionar la bondad de esta práctica a largo plazo.
Cada vez más, me voy dando cuenta que la gente que viene a tratarse aprenden a recuperar sus habilidades, y las abrazan como herramientas poderosas que son. La medicina Oriental ofrece un marco maravillosamente claro y meticulosamente arraigado para la recuperación y desarrollo de estos dones y habilidades, que entonces se convierten en cauces para el crecimiento creativo en vez de tóxicas cargas.
Algunos lectores empezarán a notar un sentimiento de familiaridad con lo aquí expuesto. Lo que realmente muchos de nosotros atravesamos en nuestro viaje de sanación es una especie de re-sensibilización, y con esto me refiero tanto como paciente como terapeuta o incluso como persona que apoya a alguien que vive ese proceso. Esto es algunas veces agradable, otras absolutamente maravilloso, poderoso y liberador. Algunas veces, por el contrario, es de hecho muy, muy doloroso.
Personalmente pertenezco al afortunado grupo de individuos que viven la sanación –en ambas formas de terapia y educación- como una serie de placenteros y liberadores descubrimientos e incluso como redescubrimientos. Fluyen los recuerdos, se re-experimentan las vivencias, a veces a un ritmo vertiginoso, y puertas que permanecían cerradas durante mucho tiempo ahora se abren de par en par. Algunos lectores reconocerán esto como experiencias similares o idénticas a las suyas.
Están sin embargo aquellos cuyas experiencias de curación se caracterizan por el dolor. Estas son las personas para las que nosotros, los terapeutas de medicina Oriental, tenemos talentos únicos que ofrecer. Los flujos y estructuras de nuestras tradiciones crean una estructura de calma y apoyo alrededor de esas experiencias tanto tiempo sufridas y duramente reprimidas.
Las estelas asociativas de los cinco elementos y en particular de los cinco espíritus, nos ofrecen certeras herramientas para clasificar, anotar y caracterizar aspectos del comportamiento para que estos empáticos puedan comenzar a poner sus experiencias en contexto, colocarlas en un mapa y marcar puntos de referencia para la reestructuración de pensamientos, sentimientos y comprensión espiritual.
Además de esto, tenemos la posibilidad de contribuir a la completa re-calibración de los límites concernientes a la sensibilidad. La gente que reacciona al comportamiento desagradable y brusco o a insultos provocativos suelen ser animados a ser menos sensitivos, como si la sensibilidad en sí misma fuera una propiedad negativa y destructiva.
Seguramente este no es el caso. La sensibilidad existe por una razón. Una de nuestras tareas podría ser ayudar a aquellos que están en posesión de un poco común alto grado de sensibilidad a recuperarla como una fortaleza más que rechazarla como prueba de debilidad.
Administrada de forma apropiada, la sensibilidad es una herramienta para navegar por profundidades inexploradas y recorrer alturas a las que rara vez se llega. Parte de nuestra responsabilidad como terapeutas podría ser recuperar nuestra propia sensibilidad, pulirla y elevarla a nuevos niveles para convertirnos también en empáticos operando a niveles más altos de sensibilidad, con acceso a nuestros propios dones especiales y poderes de percepción.
La gente sensitiva puede llegar a ser poderosos agentes de cambio positivo si se les da un contexto empático donde estabilizarse y enriquecerse. ¿Llegaremos a ser los pilares de apoyo?
