Source text - English Christopher Dawson, who devoted most of his professional life to the study of the past, possessed an uncanny, even unnerving, insight into the future—or so a careful reader of Understanding Europe must conclude. More than half a century ago, Dawson understood that Europe risked coming apart at the seams, not so much because of the immediate dangers posed by the Cold War (although they were real enough), but because of an infidelity to the past—an infidelity to cultural and spiritual roots. Europe, Dawson proposed, was less a political entity than a cultural community: “a society of people who share the same faith and the same moral values.” But what if that faith atrophies? Could those common moral values (which, after all, were a by-product of that faith) long endure? In these early years of the twenty-first century, the answer to that question seems ever more clear: and the answer is no. What Dawson accurately described as Europe’s mid-twentieth century “spiritual crisis” has, as he foresaw, produced in its wake a loss of cultural confidence (or, as he puts it here, a loss of nerve), which in turn has led to a loss of faith in reason. And the results, as Dawson presciently saw, would not be pretty:
This ..... breach with the old European Christian tradition is a much more serious thing than any political or economic revolution, for it means not only the dethronement of the moral conscience but also the abdication of the rational consciousness which is inseparably bound up with it. It is indeed doubtful if Western society can survive the change, for it is not a return to the past or to the roots of our social life. It is too radical for that. Instead of going downstairs step by step, neo-paganism jumps out of the top-storey window, and whether one jumps out of the right-hand window or the left makes very little difference by the time one reaches the pavement.1

Where do we find the evidence today for this crisis of civilizational morale? Its most dramatic manifestation, I suggest, is not to be found in Europe’s fondness for governmental bureaucracy or for fiscally shaky health care schemes and pension plans; nor is the drama of the crisis captured fully by the appeasement mentality that some European leaders display toward jihadist terrorism. No, the most dramatic manifestation of Europe’s crisis of civilizational morale is the fact that Europe is depopulating itself. Several decades of below-replacement-level birthrates in Europe have created situations that would have been almost unimaginable at the height of Christopher Dawson’s fame and influence, the period between the early 1930s and late 1950s. By the middle of the twenty-first century, some demographers estimate, sixty percent of the Italian people will have no personal experience of a brother, a sister, an aunt, an uncle, or a cousin; Germany will lose the equivalent of the entire population of the former East Germany; and Spain’s population will decline by almost one-quarter. Europe is depopulating itself in numbers not seen since the Black Death of the fourteenth century. When an entire continent, healthier, wealthier, and more secure than ever before, fails to create the human future in the most elemental sense—by creating the next generation—something very serious is afoot. It makes eminent sense, following Dawson, to suggest that that “something” is a crisis of civilizational morale. Understanding its origins is important in itself; it is also critically important for Americans. Why? Because some of the acids that have eaten away at European culture during the past two centuries are at work in the United States, and indeed throughout the West, at a time when another civilizational enterprise, with a far different vision of the future, is contesting with the West for the definition of that future, often in aggressive ways. One of the reasons to read or reread Christopher Dawson today is that doing so prompts us to think about history in a fresh way. Twentyfirst-century Europeans and Americans alike typically think of “history” as the product of politics (the contest for power) or economics (the contest for wealth). But as Dawson understood so well, both “history as politics” and “history as economics” take a partial truth and try, un

successfully, to turn it into a comprehensive truth. Thus understanding Europe’s current situation, and what it means for America, requires us to look at history in a different way—a Dawsonian way—through the prism of culture. At the beginning of the twentieth century, Europe was the acknowledged center of world civilization. Yet within fifty years, that same Europe produced two world wars, three totalitarian systems, a Cold War that threatened global disaster, oceans of blood, mountains of corpses, the Gulag, and Auschwitz. What happened? Perhaps more to the point, why had what happened, happened? Political and economic analyses don’t offer fully satisfactory answers to those questions. Cultural— which is to say spiritual, even theological—answers might help. That is what Christopher Dawson tried to do in Understanding Europe. Others made parallel analyses. Take, for example, the proposal made by Fr. Henri de Lubac, S.J., in 1942. De Lubac argued that Europe’s torments in the 1940s were the result of a constellation of defective ideas which he summarized under the rubric “atheistic humanism”—the deliberate rejection of the God of the Bible in the name of human liberation.2 This, de Lubac suggested, was something entirely new. Biblical man had perceived his relationship to the God of Abraham, Moses, and Jesus as a liberation: liberation from the terrors of gods like Moloch who demanded extortionate sacrifice; liberation from the whims of the gods of Olympus who played games with human lives; liberation from the vagaries of Fate. The God of the Bible was different. And because biblical man believed that he could have access to the one true God through prayer and worship, he believed that history could be bent in a more humane direction—and that it was man’s responsibility to do so. One of European civilization’s most distinctive cultural characteristics is the conviction that life isn’t just one damn thing after another, about which little or nothing can be done; Europe learned that from its faith in the God of the Bible. Several of the most significant figures in nineteenth-century European high culture turned this inside out and upside down, however.

Human freedom and human greatness required rejecting the biblical God, according to such influential thinkers as Auguste Comte, Ludwig Feuerbach, Karl Marx, and Friedrich Nietzsche. Here, de Lubac argued, were ideas with consequences. For when you marry modern technology to Comte’s positivism, Feuerbach’s subjectivism, Marx’s materialism, and Nietzsche’s will-to-power, what you get are the great mid-twentieth century tyrannies—communism, fascism, Nazism. The same point has been made more recently by the English historian Michael Burleigh in two important new studies, Earthly Powers and Sacred Causes: ultramundane humanism, in its quest for a worldly utopia, is inevitably inhuman humanism.3 The first explosive result of this profound shift in European high culture was World War I. For the Great War—not only in its origins, but even more in its mindless continuation after the impossibility of a rapid military resolution was obvious to all—was the lethal by-product of a crisis of civilizational morality, a failure of moral reason in a culture that had given the world the very idea of “moral reason.” That crisis of moral reason led to the crisis of civilizational morale that is much with us, and especially with Europe, today. This crisis, as Dawson hints in Understanding Europe, would only become fully visible after the end of the Cold War. Its effects were first masked by the illusory peace of the interwar period; then by the rise of totalitarianism and the Great Depression; then by the Second World War itself; then by the Cold War. It was only after 1991, when the
seventy-seven-year-long European civil war that had begun with the guns of August 1914 had ended, that the long-term effects of what Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn once called Europe’s “rage of self-mutilation” came to the surface of history and could be seen for what they are.4 Europe is experiencing a crisis of civilizational morale today because of what happened in Europe ninety years ago, and because of what paved the

way, culturally, for that political catastrophe. The damage done to the fabric of European culture and civilization in the Great War could only be seen clearly when the Great War’s political effects had been cleared from the board in 1991. Contemporary Europe is not bedeviled by the rawest forms of de Lubac’s “atheistic humanism”; the Second World War and the Cold War settled that by putting an end to fascism, German National Socialism, and Marxism-Leninism. Europe today is profoundly shaped, however, by a kinder, gentler cousin, which the Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor has termed “exclusive humanism”: a set of ideas and political default positions according to which (and in the name of democracy, human rights, tolerance, and civility) all transcendent religious or moral reference points must be kept out of European public life.5 This conviction led to two episodes in recent years that tell us a lot about Europe’s crisis of civilizational morale, and where that crisis can lead politically. The first episode involved the drafting of a new constitutional treaty to govern the dramatically enlarged European Union. That process set off a raucous argument (which would have appalled, but perhaps not surprised, Christopher Dawson) over whether the Euro-constitution’s preamble should acknowledge Christianity as one of the sources of European civilization and of contemporary Europe’s commitments to human rights and democracy. The debate was sometimes silly, not infrequently bitter, and was finally resolved in favor of Dawson’s “neopaganism” and Taylor’s “exclusive humanism”: a treaty of some 70,000 words could not find room for one word—“Christianity.” Yet while following this debate, one had the uncomfortable sense that the real argument was not about the past but about the future—would religiously informed moral argument have a place in the European public square? A disturbing answer to that question came in October 2004, when Rocco Buttiglione, a distinguished Italian philosopher then serving as minister for European affairs in the Italian government, was nominated as E.U. commissioner of justice. Professor Buttiglione, who would have

been considered an adornment of any sane government since Cato the Elder, was then subjected to a nasty inquisition, during which numerous members of the European Parliament made it unpleasantly clear that Buttiglione’s convictions about the moral character of homosexual acts and about the nature of marriage disqualified him from holding high office on the European Commission—despite Buttiglione’s sworn commitment, substantiated by a lifetime of work, to uphold and defend everyone’s legitimate civil rights. Buttiglione ultimately withdrew when it became clear that too many Euro-parliamentarians agreed with one of their number who claimed that Buttiglione’s moral convictions—not any actions he had undertaken, and would undertake, but his convictions—were “in direct contradiction of European law.” Buttiglione described this to a British newspaper as the “new totalitarianism,” which is not, I fear, an exaggeration.6 Six months after the Buttiglione affair came to its disgraceful end, Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger described the same phenomenon as “the dictatorship of relativism,” in a sermon opening the papal conclave of 2005.7 That this new dictatorship marches under the banner of “tolerance” only makes matters worse. But from whence does it spring? One of Europe’s wisest men, the French philosopher Rémi Brague, wrote in 2005 that, while the nineteenth century had been the century of good-and-evil (with the “social question” posed by the Industrial Revolution dominating public life) and the twentieth century had been the century of truth-and-falsehood (as great ideological systems contended for the human future), the twenty-first century would be the century of being-or-nothingness. A nihilism that had soured on the very mystery of being itself had settled like a thick fog over European high culture, Brague suggested; that nihilism was informed by a deep skepticism about the human capacity to know the truth of anything with certainty; and it had given rise to a moral relativism which had eaten away at Europe’s capacity to give an account of its commitments to freedom and justice, civility and tolerance. The net result of this

witches’ brew, Brague proposed, could only be a politics of coercion, for the arts of democratic persuasion could not function in a cultural climate marked by nihilism, skepticism, and relativism. Thus Buttiglione’s “new totalitarianism,” or Ratzinger’s “dictatorship of relativism,” are real and present dangers, and the struggle to resist them defines one pole of Europe’s bipolar culture war, which Dawson saw coming.8 Europe’s other culture war, which Dawson could not have foreseen, is brought into focus by the relentlessness of Europe’s demographics— the root of which Dawson understood all too well. To repeat: the wasting disease that has beset this once-greatest of civilizations is not physical, but rather a disease in the realm of the human spirit. The Orthodox theologian David Hart, in a variant on Rémi Brague’s theme, has called it the disease of “metaphysical boredom”—boredom with the mystery, passion, and adventure of life itself.9 Europe, in Hart’s image, is boring itself to death. And that is having the most profound consequences. For while Europe is boring itself to death, it is allowing twenty-firstcentury jihadists—who regard their military defeats at Poitiers in 732, Lepanto in 1571, and Vienna in 1683, as well as their expulsion from Spain in 1492, as temporary reversals en route to Islam’s final triumph in Europe—to imagine that the day of victory is not far off. Not because Europe will be conquered by an invading army marching under the green banners of the Prophet, but because Europe, having culturally disarmed itself to the point where it cannot give a robust account of its commitments to human rights, democracy, and the rule of law, and having depopulated itself out of the boredom that is an ever-present danger in what Zbigniew Brzezinski once called modernity’s “permissive cornucopia,” will have handed the future over to those who wish to make Europe a cultural and political extension of the Arab-Islamic world.10 Should that happen, the irony would be unmistakable: the drama of an exclusivist humanism, emptying Europe of its soul, would have played itself out in the triumph of a thoroughly nonhumanistic theism. Europe’s contemporary crisis of civilizational morale would

reach its bitter conclusion when Notre Dame becomes Hagia Sophia on the Seine—a great Christian church become an Islamic museum. At which point, we may be sure, the human rights proclaimed by those exclusive humanists who insist that a culture’s spiritual aspirations have nothing to do with its politics would be in very, very serious trouble indeed. It need not happen. There are signs of spiritual and cultural renewal in Europe, especially among young people; the most influential of contemporary European philosophers, Jürgen Habermas, who once defended a hard form of exclusivist humanism, now argues that a humane and democratic politics requires a foundation built of moral norms that we can know to be true; the Buttiglione affair raised alarms about the new intolerance that masquerades in the name of “tolerance”; the brutal murder of Dutch film maker Theo van Gogh by a middle-class DutchMoroccan, the July 7, 2005, bombings in London, and the depredations attendant on the 2005 Danish cartoons controversy have reminded Europeans that “root causes” don’t really explain jihadist ideology or jihadist terrorism. Perhaps most importantly, the outlines of a new European conversation that challenges the sterilities of exclusivist humanism, while engaging both believers and nonbelievers alike, has come into focus in the past year, thanks to the collaborative work of Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, and Marcello Pera, a nonbeliever and philosopher of science who is a member of the Italian Senate (and was, until the recent change of government in Italy, the Senate’s president). In a jointly authored book, Without Roots, Ratzinger and Pera advanced strikingly similar Dawsonian analyses of Europe’s crisis of civilizational morale, the roots of which both men located in a loss of faith in reason, including moral reason—moral reason being one of the distinctive characteristics of the culture that arose from the meeting, in what we now know as “Europe,” of Jerusalem, Athens, and Rome.11 Moreover, Ratzinger and Pera agreed, in a variant on Arnold Toynbee’s theory of historical change, that a “creative minority” of men and women, convinced that the truths the West lives politically are truths

susceptible to rational defense, can be the agents of Europe’s rebirth as a culturally self-confident civilization, capable of giving an account of its democratic political aspirations—which is to say, a civilization willing to face squarely and respond imaginatively to the threat posed by the aggressive elements of the far different civilizational project now housed within it.12 Thus Benedict and Pera have given the world a vocabulary through which a discussion of the sources and threat of jihadist ideology can be engaged by believers and nonbelievers alike, and without falling into the trap of xenophobia: the vocabulary of “rationality” and “irrationality.” If Europe begins to recover its faith in reason, then at least some in Europe may, in time, rediscover the reasonableness of faith; and in any event, a renewed faith in reason would provide an antidote to metaphysical boredom—and thus open the prospect of a new birth of freedom in Europe. Europe’s current distress is a reminder to all of use who are “Europe transplanted”—and who should feel a deep filial piety toward Europe because of that—that societies and cultures are only as great as their spiritual aspirations. As Christopher Dawson knew, it is not an act of ingratitude toward the achievements of the Enlightenment to suggest that the soul-withering secularism—the exclusivist humanism—that has grown out of one stream of Enlightenment thought threatens the future of the West, precisely because it prevents us from giving an account, to ourselves and our children and grandchildren, of the noble political ends embodied in the western democratic tradition. As Marcello Pera put it in Without Roots, “Absolute [worldliness], supposing there is such a thing, is an absolute vacuum in which neither the happy majority nor the creative minorities can exist.”13 Christopher Dawson understood that, taught that, and showed, through his studies in history, why that is always and everywhere true. To re-read, or to discover, Christopher Dawson is not an elegiac exercise. Rather, it is a call to renewal—a moral and cultural call to arms, not only in Europe, but throughout the western world.

The average European has never given much thought to the nature of the international society to which he belongs. He has been taught to concentrate his attention on the history of his own nation and the political and economic problems of his own state. And so today, when the European question has become a vital political issue and the very existence of Europe is at stake, he is often at a loss to say what Europe is, what right it has to exist and what are the conditions of its survival. Thus there is an urgent need for the better understanding of Europe, not only as a living society of peoples but as the creator of what we call “modern civilization”. For however uncertain the political prospects of Europe may be, the overwhelming importance of its contribution to civilization remains, and unless we understand this, we cannot understand much about the world in which we live. At the present time we are witnessing a sharp reaction against the world expansion of the European culture which took place in the last century. Yet even this reaction, paradoxical as it may seem, is a result of European influence, since Oriental nationalism and communism owe their origins to the transmission of Western ideas and Western political movements to the Eastern peoples. In the same way it is impossible to understand the nature of European nationalism, unless we study it in relation to Europe as a whole, for Europe is essentially a society of peoples and it is through the cooperation and conflicts of the European nations that the characteristic achievements of European culture have been made. Finally, we cannot begin to understand Europe itself unless we study the tradition of Christian culture, which was the original bond of European unity and the source of its common spiritual aims and its common moral values. In the following pages I have attempted to study these three inter

related themes: that Europe is a society of peoples; that Europe is a spiritual unity, based on the tradition of Christian culture; and that the modern revolt against Europe is the inevitable result of its loss of the common spiritual aims and the common system of moral values which it derived from the Christian tradition. Whether my readers agree or disagree with my conclusions, I think there are few who will deny that these questions deserve more attention than they have hitherto received, or that our system of education should give a larger place not only to the history of Europe but still more to the study of Christian culture.

¿Dónde se ven signos de esta crisis moral en esta civilización? Su manifestación más dramática, a mi juicio, no es la propensión de Europa a la burocracia gubernamental o la precariedad de los sistemas de financiación de la seguridad social y las pensiones; ni siquiera la mentalidad benevolente hacia los yihadistas, de la que hacen gala algunos líderes europeos, refleja suficientemente esta crisis. El hombre en la Biblia concebía su relación con el Dios de Abraham, de Moisés y Jesús como una liberación: liberación de los dioses amenazadores como Moloch, que requería sacrificios; liberación de los dioses caprichosos del Olimpo, que jugaban con la vida del hombre; liberación de los antojos del Destino. El Dios de la Biblia era diferente. Y dado que el hombre de la Biblia creía que gracias a la oración y alabanza podía relacionarse con Dios, creía que la historia avanzaría en una dirección favorable al hombre -y que en esto consistía la responsabilidad humana. Una de las características más sobresalientes de la cultura europea es la convicción de que la vida no es un encadenamiento de hechos predestinados, sin que nada pueda hacerse por alterar su curso; Europa había asimilado este principio del Dios de la Biblia.
Aún así, varias de las grandes figuras de la cultura europea del siglo diecinueve habían dado la espalda a estos postulados.
La libertad y esplendor de la figura humana exigía la negación del Dios biblíco, según algunos pensadores influyentes como Auguste Comte, Ludwig Feuerbach, Karl Marx y Friedrich Nietzsche. Ahí radican las ideas, según de Lubac, que trajeron estas consecuencias. Ya que cuando se unen los efectos de la tecnología moderna con el positivismo de Comte, el subjetivismo de Feuerbach, el materialismo de Marx y el voluntarismo de Nietzsche, se obtienen las grandes tiranías del siglo veinte —el comunismo, el fascismo y el nazismo. Estas mismas conclusiones han sido expuestas recientemente por el historiador inglés Michael Burleigh en dos nuevos estudios de importancia, Earthly Powers y Sacred Causes (Poderes Terrenales y Causas Sagradas): el humanismo más allá del mundo, en su búsqueda de una utopía mundial, acaba siendo un humanismo inhumano .
El primer resultado explosivo de este cambio profundo de la cultura europea fue la Primera guerra mundial Ya que este conflicto -no sólo en sus orígenes, sino sobre todo por su prolongación insensata tras haber constatado que una solución militar rápida no era posible-- es un producto derivado de la crisis moral de la civilización occidental, un fracaso de la razón moral en una cultura que había gestado la idea misma de "razón moral". Esta crisis de la razón condujo a la crisis moral de la civilización que estamos viviendo hoy, especialmente en Europa.
Esta crisis, tal y como apunta Dawson en Hacia la comprensión de Europa, no se hará patente enteramente hasta el final de la Guerra Fría. Al principio sus efectos quedaban disimulados tras el simulacro de paz del periodo de entreguerras; luego por el auge de los totalitarismos y la gran depresión; después por la Segunda Guerra Mundial y luego por la Guerra Fría. Por fin a partir de 1991, una vez terminados los setenta y siete años de guerra civil europea que había comenzado en 1914, comenzaron a aparecer los efectos de lo que Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn calificó de "ira autodestructora" de Europa y la historia pudo verse tal cual era . Europa está atravesando hoy una crisis moral de su civilización como consecuencia de lo sucedido hace noventa años y de todos los factores culturales que habían sentado las bases de esta catástrofe política. Los daños producidos en el tejido cultural y la civilización europeas durante la Primera Guerra Mundial sólo pudieron verse con claridad una vez que sus efectos políticos desaparecieron en 1991.
La Europa contemporánea no está atormentada por las formas más salvajes de lo que De Lubac llama "ateísmo humanista"; la Segunda Guerra Mundial y la Guerra Fría han acabado con el fascismo, el nacional socialismo alemán y el marxismo leninismo. Sin embargo, la Europa actual está modelada por una forma de ateísmo, más amable y suave, lo que el filósofo canadiense Charles Taylor ha llamado "humanismo exclusivo": una serie de ideas y posiciones políticas estándar que establecen (en nombre de la democracia, los derechos humanos, la tolerancia y el civismo) que cualquier referencia religiosa o moral debe excluirse de la vida pública europea . Estas convicciones han desembocado en dos episodios recientes que dicen mucho acerca de la crisis moral de la civilización europea y de las consecuencias políticas que puede arrastrar.
El primer episodio concierne a la redacción de un nuevo tratado constitucional para regir una Unión Europea que había crecido enormemente. Este proceso abrió un debate enconado (que habría consternado a Christopher Dawson, aunque probablemente no le hubiera sorprendido) sobre la conveniencia de citar en el preámbulo de la Constitución europea las raíces cristianas de la civilización europea y de sus compromisos actuales en cuanto se refiere a derechos humanos y democracia. El debate resultó a veces absurdo, con frecuencia amargo, y al final se resolvió a favor del "neopaganismo" de Dawson y el "humanismo exclusivo" de Taylor: en un tratado de cerca de 70.000 palabras no había sitio para la palabra cristianismo. Pero al seguir este debate, daba la sensación incómoda de que el nudo de la cuestión no era el pasado, sino el futuro –si de ahora en adelante podría sostenerse una posición con argumentos religiosos y morales en el ámbito público europeo.
Esta cuestión tuvo una respuesta inquietante en octubre de 2004, cuando Rocco Buttiglione, un destacado filósofo, que por aquel entonces ejercía de ministro de Asuntos Europeos del gobierno italiano, fue nombrado Comisario Europeo de Justicia. El profesor Buttiglione, una excelente elección para cualquier gobierno en su sano juicio desde los tiempos de Catón el viejo, fue objeto de una desagradable campaña inquisitorial, en la que muchos miembros del parlamento europeo dejaron claro que las convicciones de Buttiglione sobre la moralidad de los actos homosexuales y sobre la naturaleza del matrimonio lo descalificaban para ejercer cualquier puesto de elevada responsabilidad en el seno de la Comisión Europea –esto a pesar de que el señor Buttiglione había prestado juramento de defender y apoyar los derechos de todo ciudadano, tal y como había demostrado a lo largo de toda su carrera. Buttiglione hubo de retirar su candidatura cuando quedo claro que eran demasiados parlamentarios los que sostenían el parecer de uno de ellos, de que las convicciones morales de Buttiglione –atención, no las acciones que hubiera podido realizar en el pasado o pudiera llevar a cabo en un futuro, sino sus convicciones morales- estaban “directamente en contradicción con la legislación europea”.
Buttiglione calificó esto en un periódico inglés como de un “nuevo totalitarismo”, y me temo que no es una exageración . 6 Seis meses después del desgraciado desenlace del asunto Buttiglione, el cardenal Joseph Ratzinger describió este mismo fenómeno como la “dictadura del relativismo”, en el sermón de apertura del conclave de 2005 . 7 El hecho de que esta dictadura actúe bajo la bandera de la tolerancia no hace sino empeorar las cosas. Pero, ¿de dónde arranca esta situación?
Uno de los más profundos pensadores de Europa, el filósofo francés Remi Brague, escribió en 2005 que, mientras que el siglo diecinueve había sido el siglo de la confrontación del bien y del mal (con la cuestión social planteada por el revolución industrial como telón de fondo) y el siglo veinte el siglo de la verdad frente a la falsedad (en forma de enfrentamiento entre sistemas ideológicos por la organización del futuro humano), en el siglo veintiuno se enfrentan el ser o la nada. Un nihilismo que ha agriado el misterio mismo de la existencia y se ha instalado en la cultura europea como una niebla espesa, sugiere Brague; este nihilismo se arraiga en un escepticismo profundo que niega la capacidad humana de alcanzar una certeza sobre la verdad de cualquier cosa. Todo ello ha desembocado en un relativismo moral que ha menguado la capacidad de Europa para dar razón de sus principios de libertad, de justicia, de civismo y tolerancia. El resultado de esta pócima, según Brague, no puede ser otra cosa que una política coercitiva, ya que la democracia funciona a base de persuasión y esto no es posible en un clima de nihilismo, escepticismo y relativismo. Así pues, el “nuevo totalitarismo” del que habla Buttiglione, la “dictadura del relativismo” en palabras de Ratzinger, son peligros reales y presentes y la lucha para resistir constituye uno de los polos de la guerra bipolar descrita y pronosticada por Dawson .
La otra fuente de conflicto en Europa, que Dawson no podía prever, surge como consecuencia de los cambios demográficos, su desaceleración –cuya raíz Dawson había analizado ampliamente. Permítanme pues repetirlo: la enfermedad que debilita y desgasta a la que fuera la mejor de las civilizaciones, no es física, sino una enfermedad de orden espiritual. El teólogo ortodoxo, David Hart, habla, introduciendo una variante al argumento de Brague, del “aburrimiento metafísico” –aburrimiento con respecto al misterio, la pasión y la aventura de la vida misma . Europa, según esta imagen de Hart, se está muriendo de aburrimiento. Y esto está teniendo repercusiones muy profundas.
Ya que mientras Europa se muere de aburrimiento, permite a los yihadistas del siglo veintiuno –que consideran sus derrotas militares en Poitiers en 732, en Lepanto en 1571, en Viena en 1683 y su expulsión de España en 1492, como meros percances en lo que será el triunfo final del Islam en Europa- pensar que la victoria esta cercana. No porque un ejército invasor enarbolando la bandera verde del Profeta vaya a entrar en Europa, sino porque ésta, carente de argumentos culturales que sostengan sus posiciones en cuanto a los derechos humanos, la democracia y el imperio del Derecho se refiere, y habiéndose despoblado como consecuencia del aburrimiento, un peligro permanente de lo que Zbigniev Brzenzinski llamó “la panoplia permisiva” de la modernidad, pondrá su futuro en manos de quienes desean hacer de Europa una extensión política y cultural del mundo árabe e islámico . Si esto sucediera, sería una paradoja flagrante: el drama de un humanismo exclusivo que, tras vaciar de contenido el alma europea, quedara él mismo fuera de juego por el triunfo aplastante de un humanismo teísta. La crisis moral de la civilización europea alcanzará su punto álgido cuando Notre Dame se convierta en la Hagia Sophia del Sena –una gran catedral de la cristiandad convertida en un museo islámico. A estas alturas, puede usted estar seguro, los derechos humanos proclamados por los partidarios del humanismo exclusivo que insisten en que las aspiraciones espirituales y culturales no tienen nada que ver con la política, estarían muy malparados.
No habrá que llegar tan lejos. Hay indicios de un florecimiento espiritual y cultural en Europa, sobre todo entre la gente joven; el filosofo contemporáneo más influyente, Jürgen Habermas, quien fuera antaño partidario de un humanismo exclusivo a todo trance, ahora defiende que una política y una democracia humanas requieren unos cimientos morales en los que se pueda tener certeza; el asunto Buttiglione lanzó la señal de alarma sobre las nuevas formas de intolerancia disfrazadas de tolerancia; el asesinato brutal del director de cine danés Theo Van Gogh por un danés de origen marroquí de clase media el 7 de julio de 2005, los atentados en Londres y los estragos causados por la controversia acerca de las viñetas humorísticas en Dinamarca en 2005 han recordado a los europeos que “los orígenes” no pueden explicar ni la ideología ni el terrorismo yihadista. Y lo que quizás sea más importante, se ha esbozado una nueva conversación europea que pone en tela de juicio la esterilidad causada por el humanismo exclusivo y reúne a los creyentes y no creyentes. Esto se ha hecho camino el año pasado gracias a la colaboración entre Joseph Ratzinger, convertido en el papa Benedicto XVI, y Marcello Pera, un filosofo de la ciencia no creyente miembro del Senado italiano (fue incluso presidente del Senado). En un libro escrito conjuntamente, Sin raíces, Ratzinger y Pera pergeñan un análisis de la crisis moral de la civilización europea que tiene un parecido sorprendente al de Dawson, ya que ambos sitúan la raíz de la crisis en la pérdida de confianza en la razón, incluida la razón moral –pues ésta es uno de los rasgos distintivos de la cultura que surgió del encuentro de Jerusalén, Atenas y Roma, en lo que hoy conocemos como Europa .
Es más, Ratzinger y Pera, coinciden, en una variante de la teoría del cambio histórico de Arnold Tonbybee, en que una “minoría creativa” de hombres y mujeres convencida de que las verdades encarnadas en la vida política occidental son verdades que pueden ser defendidas racionalmente, puede ser actores de un renacimiento cultural europeo que dé lugar a una civilización segura de sí misma y capaz de responder de sus aspiraciones políticas democráticas –lo que equivale a decir una civilización dispuesta a afrontar directamente y dar respuestas imaginativas a la amenaza planteada por los elementos partidarios de un proyecto de civilización muy diferente y que se encuentran dentro de sus fronteras. 12 De esta forma Ratzinger y Pera han dado al mundo un vocabulario con el que todos, sean o no creyentes, pueden entablar una discusión sobre las fuentes y amenazas de la ideología yihadista, y sin caer en la trampa de la xenofobia, que habla de racionalidad e irracionalidad. Si Europa comienza a recobrar su confianza en la razón, entonces dentro de unos años habrá quien en Europa pueda redescubrir la fe; en cualquier caso, una vuelta a la razón constituye un antídoto al aburrimiento metafísico, abriendo así camino a un nuevo florecer de las libertades en Europa.
El malestar actual europeo sirve como recordatorio para todos aquellos que somos como un “transplante” europeo –y que por ello deberían sentir una piedad filial- de que las sociedades y culturas son grandes sólo en la medida en que lo sean sus aspiraciones espirituales. Como el propio Christopher Dawson expuso, no es un acto de ingratitud hacia los logros de la Ilustración, el sugerir que la secularización que ahoga las almas –el humanismo exclusivo-, fruto de una de las corrientes del pensamiento ilustrado, amenaza el futuro de Occidente, precisamente porque nos impide dar razones a nosotros, nuestros hijos y nietos, de los más nobles objetivos políticos consagrados por la tradición democrática occidental. Tal y como dice Marcello Pera en Sin raíces “una ausencia completa de vínculos nacionales, suponiendo que esto pudiera existir, es un vacio total en el que no puede existir ni una mayoría contenta, ni una minoría creativa”. 13 Christopher Dawson lo comprendió, lo enseñó y en sus investigaciones sobre la historia demostró cómo esto se verifica siempre y en todas partes.
Descubrir o leer de nuevo a Christopher Dawson no es un ejercicio de nostalgia. Es una llamada a renovarse –una llamada a rearmarse cultural y moralmente, no sólo en Europa, sino en todo Occidente.

DEBARQUEMENT ET LIBERATION DE PROVENCE
Sur les hauteurs de la ville de Toulon, le mémorial du débarquement et de la libération en Provence retrace une page essentielle de l’histoire de la Seconde Guerre mondiale : le débarquement de Provence du 15 août 1944.
La Tour Beaumont, fortification du milieu du XIX siècle, se niche dans un véritable écrin de verdure, classé Natura 2000, le Mont Faron. Elle y abrite depuis 1964 le mémorial du débarquement de Provence voulu par le général de Gaulle.
Un point de vue panoramique exceptionnel
Son panorama à couper le souffle sur la Méditerranée place le visiteur au coeur de l’Histoire, avec d’un côté la ville de Toulon, dont la libération le 27 août 1944, fut un événement crucial de la bataille de Provence, et de l’autre, son arrière pays où se sont illustrés les résistants dans le maquis.
Le mémorial rénové en 2017 est un lieu de souvenir et d’histoire, un véritable outil de transmission de la mémoire aux jeunes générations.
Un lieu d’hommage, d’histoire et de transmission
Une exposition permanente, faisant appel à des outils de médiation modernes, présente tous les aspects du débarquement allié et de la libération de la Provence. Sur un écran géant de 17 mètres de long, un spectacle immersif fait revivre heure par heure les opérations qui ont conduit à la victoire.
Une collection exceptionnelle d’objets d’époque, d’archives ainsi que les témoignages des combattants plongent le visiteur au coeur de ces instants historiques et permettent de mesurer le sacrifice de nos libérateurs.
Ce haut lieu de la mémoire nationale rend hommage aux combattants venus de tous les horizons pour libérer la France et l’Europe : Français libres, soldats venus d’Afrique, Alliés et résistants.
Les hauts lieux de la mémoire nationale
Au nombre de neuf, dont le mémorial du débarquement et de la libération en Provence, ces sites relèvent du ministère des armées (Direction des patrimoines, de la mémoire et des archives) qui a confié depuis 2010 la mise en ouvre de leur entretien, de leur rénovation et de leur valorisation à l’Office national des anciens combattants et victimes de guerre (ONACVG).
Symboliques de différents aspects des conflits contemporains dont ils perpétuent la mémoire, les hauts lieux marquent la volonté de l’État d’honorer ceux qui ont combattu pour la France ou qui sont été victimes des conflits danslesquels elle a été engagée. Vecteurs de transmission des valeurs de la République, notamment auprès des jeunes, ils contribuent à renforcer le civisme et le lien armée-Nation.

DESEMBARCO Y LIBERACIÓN DE LA PROVENZA
Situado en lo alto de la ciudad de Tolón, el Memorial del desembarco y la liberación de la Provenza recorre una de las paginas esenciales de la historia de la Segunda Guerra Mundial: el desembarco de Provenza, que tuvo lugar el 15 de agosto de 1944.
La Torre Beaumont, una fortaleza de mediados del siglo XIX, se alza en medio del Monte Faron, un entorno natural protegido por la red de conservación Natura 2000. Esta torre alberga desde 1964 el Memorial del desembarco y la liberación de Provenza, por voluntad expresa del general De Gaulle.
Una vista panorámica excepcional
Las vistas panorámicas sobre el Mediterráneo que se ofrecen al visitante, le sitúan en el centro de la historia, a un lado contempla la ciudad de Tolón, cuya liberación, el 27 de agosto de 1944, fue un momento crucial de la batalla de Provenza, y por el otro lado divisa el relieve del interior, en donde actuaron los resistentes del maquis.
El Memorial, que se renovó enteramente en 2017, es un lugar de recuerdo de un pasado histórico y un verdadero instrumento de transmisión de la memoria a las nuevas generaciones.
Un lugar de homenaje, historia y transmisión
En una exposición permanente, dotada de los más modernos medios de mediación cultural, se presentan todos los aspectos del desembarco aliado y de la liberación de Provenza. En una pantalla gigante de 17 metros, se proyecta una película y diversas secuencias paralelas que permiten la inmersión del espectador en el desarrollo de la operación hora tras hora hasta la victoria.
Asimismo, se presenta una colección excepcional de objetos, archivos y testimonios de los combatientes, todo lo cual contribuye a que el visitante se sumerja de lleno en estos momentos históricos y pueda así aquilatar el sacrificio de nuestros libertadores.
Este lugar simbólico de la memoria nacional quiere rendir homenaje a los combatientes venidos de muy diversos horizontes para liberar Francia y Europa: franceses de la zona libre, soldados provenientes de África, aliados y resistentes.
Los lugares de la memoria nacional
Oficialmente existen nueve centros de la memorial nacional, de los cuales forma parte el Memorial del desembarco y la liberación de Provenza. Estos lugares dependen del Ministerio de Defensa (Dirección de Patrimonio, Memoria y Archivos), quien ha confiado desde 2010 su mantenimiento, renovación y valorización a la Oficina Nacional de Veteranos y Victimas de Guerra (ONACVG).
Estos lugares simbolizan distintos aspectos de los conflictos contemporáneos, cuya memoria perpetúan. Así pues, señalan la voluntad del Estado de honrar la memoria de aquellos que lucharon por Francia o que fueron víctimas de los conflictos en que participó este país.
Son vectores de transmisión de los valores republicanos, destinados especialmente a los jóvenes y contribuyen a reforzar el civismo y el vinculo entre el ejército y la nación.

I've studied translation and interpreting at Madrid's Complutense University and at the Studio Sampere Academy in Madrid. I had the chance to get an internship at Agence France Presse where I learnt a lot. I appreciated team work and I improved a lot my speed and summary skills.
Then I passed different tests and I chose to work for Interpol OIPC at Lyon for four years where I was part of the Spanish team of translators. I helped with glossaries, started using CAT tools and enjoyed working in an international environment.
Then I married and as I wanted to avoid working alone I worked as a tourist guide for ten years.
Now that my children are older, I'm back again to translating full time.
