Source text - English How will we control our thermal environment ?
Homeostasis – the tendency for living organisms to maintain steady conditions – is one of the features that most closely link the buildings we create with biology. Where the similarities break down is that animals tend to continually modify their structures or their behaviour in order to make use of freely available energy (such as the wind), whereas we use large amounts of energy to pump heating or cooling around. In terms of physical control, biological solutions are often complex, multi-functional and highly responsive, whereas ours tend to be simple and relatively unresponsive, and the range of necessary functions are generally handled separately by mono-functional elements.

L’homéostasie, la tendance des organismes vivants à maintenir constant leur état physiologique, est l’un des traits qui rapproche le plus les bâtiments de la biologie. Les similitudes disparaissent toutefois à la façon d’utiliser l’énergie : en effet, tandis que les animaux modifient en permanence leurs structures ou leurs comportements pour se servir au mieux de l’énergie disponible (le vent par exemple), nous en consommons de grandes quantités pour chauffer ou refroidir nos bâtiments artificiellement. Les solutions biologiques qui ont pour but de contrôler les variables physiques sont souvent complexes, multifonctionnelles et extrêmement réactives. Les nôtres sont au contraire simples, manquent de souplesse et mettent en oeuvre les opérations nécessaires isolément à partir d’éléments remplissant une seule fonction.

Bio
Prior to beginning a new career in technical translation, I spent some 30 years in market research, working mostly for international projects. My thirst for languages, love of research and a hunger for change led me to Université de Paris and a one-year master's in technical translation.
I chose bio-inspired architecture as the topic for my thesis, and so discovered the amazing world of biomimicry applied to architecture. Since then, I have specialized in technical fields and the transition towards a zero-emission, more efficient and resilient model (esp., in renewables and green building).
With a master's degree in economics/management and experience as a translator with a management company specialising in SRI, I also deal with economic & general financial content.
