The invention concerns a printable image support material for thermal image transfer onto flat porous surfaces, especially an ink-jet printable thermal transfer paper.
There are various methods to transfer individual, personal images or designs onto textiles. These designs are printed on release paper or transfer paper using various printing methods such as the thermal dye diffusion transfer process (D2T2), the ink-jet printing method or the toner procedure (electrophotography) and then transferred by heat or pressure to the textile material while the paper backing is removed.
One of these procedures is described in DE 26 53 654 A1, which discloses the creation of long-life, xerographically produced images on cloth. A silicon-coated sheet with a coating layer on top is produced on which the image will be created xerographically. A disadvantage of the transfer paper with silicon coating is that the silicon residue remains on the fibres of the textile backing during the release process after the image is transferred.

DE 299 02 145 U describes a transfer paper which comprises a color receiving layer containing a finely particulate organic pigment and silica. Silica has a favorable effect on the color density. However, silica can only be added in a limited amount. At an amount of more than 15 wt. % transfer problems exist. The organic pigment melts at high temperature and forms a film. But the film is weakened if a large amount of silica is included in the film. The image transfer with such films is difficult.

Die DE29902145 U beschreibt ein Transferpapier, das eine Farbempfangsschicht umfasst, die feine organische Pigmentpartikel und Silica enthält. Silica hat eine vorteilhafte Auswirkung auf die Farbdichte. Allerdings kann Silica nur in begrenzter Menge zugegeben werden. Bei einer Menge von mehr als 15 Gew.- % bestehen Übertragungsprobleme. Das organische Pigment schmilzt bei einer hohen Temperatur und bildet einen Film. Aber der Film wird geschwächt, wenn eine große Menge Silica im Film enthalten ist. Der Bildtransfer mit solchen Filmen ist schwierig.

Source text - English Ink-jet printable vinylfilms with improved curl properties
The invention relates to an ink-jet printable static cling film with improved curl properties which is applied on a support without the requirement of an adhesion layer to be used in advertising and graphic displays.
For the purpose of advertising and graphic displays two kinds of polymer films are known. There are the self adhesive films with an adhesive coating. These films require a support provided with a release liner. In contrast, so-called static cling films have no adhesive coating. These films require the support to have a smooth surface and are applied using low pressure on the permanent support.
Polymer films for static cling films are typically PVC films (vinyl films) and are used for the decoration of windows, metal surfaces and other smooth objects. For the manufacture, transport, and storage of static cling films a support is required. Suited for this purpose are, for example, pigmented and unpigmented films or resin coated papers. The support must have a smooth surface in order to provide good adhesion to the vinyl film. However, the adhesion should not be to strong in order to avoid a deformation of the film during release of the film from the support.
A suitable support paper is coated with a pigment-containing layer and is dried by contact with a hot, highly glossy cylinder. This contact results in a support with a glossy surface. Further, extrusion coated papers are also appropriate for this purpose. The polymer which is to be extruded on the paper is most often a polyolefin. Treating the extrusion coated paper with a chill roll results in highly glossy surfaces.
U.S. Pat. No. 5,601,927 discloses a printable static cling material having a polypropylene film or a polyethylene-terephthalate film arranged between the so-called cling film and the recording layer. As an elastomeric material for the cling film a polymer on the basis of silicon or polyurethane is suggested.

Für Werbezwecke und Grafikbilder sind zwei Arten von Polymerfolien bekannt. Es gibt selbstklebende Folien mit einer adhäsiven Beschichtung. Diese Folien benötigen einen Träger, der mit einem Trennpapier versehen ist. Im Gegensatz dazu haben sogenannte statische Haftfolien keine adhäsive Beschichtung. Diese Folien benötigen den Träger für eine glatte Oberfläche und werden mit geringem Druck auf dem permanenten Träger aufgebracht.
Polymerfolien für statische Haftfolien sind typischerweise PVC-Folien (Vinylfolien) und werden für die Dekoration von Fenstern, metallischen Oberflächen und anderen glatten Objekten verwendet. Für Herstellung, Transport und Lagerung von statischen Haftfolien wird ein Träger benötigt. Für diesen Zweck geeignet sind zum Beispiel pigmentierte und unpigmentierte Folien oder harzbeschichtete Papiere. Der Träger muss eine glatte Oberfläche haben, um eine gute Haftung zur Vinylfolie zur Verfügung zu stellen. Allerdings sollte die Haftung nicht zu stark sein, damit eine Deformation der Folie während der Ablösung der Folie vom Träger vermieden wird.
Ein geeignetes Trägerpapier ist mit einer Pigment enthaltenden Schicht überzogen und durch Kontakt mit einem heißen, hochglänzenden Zylinder getrocknet. Dieser Kontakt ergibt einen Träger mit glänzender Oberfläche. Weiterhin sind extrusionsbeschichtete Papiere für diesen Zweck geeignet. Meistens ist das Polymer, das auf das Papier extrudiert wird, ein Polyolefin. Die Behandlung des extrusionsbeschichteten Papiers mit einem Kühlzylinder ergibt hochglänzende Oberflächen.
Die US5601927 offenbart ein bedruckbares statisches Haftmaterial, das eine Polypropylenfolie oder eine Polyethylenterephthalatfolie aufweist, die zwischen der sogenannten statischen Folie und der Aufzeichnungsschicht angebracht ist. Als elastomeres Material für die statische Folie wird ein Polymer auf Basis von Silikon oder Polyurethan vorgeschlagen.

As the patent researches imply the examination of documents (patents, scientific literature, ...) principally written in English and the preparation of reports written in German, I have gained some translation experience.
Especially with regard to patent claims I am used to translate precisely rather than to summarize, in order not to alter the original information content.
