Translation - English The beginning of my gap year was a shock in Cambodia
What convinced me to take gap year was a study tour to Cambodia. I joined in my first year through university. As I had spent a very ordinary campus life, I wanted to go to abroad. I found a tour held by a NPO by chance and I applied without giving it much thought. Not knowing anything, literally, I flew to Cambodia and I was so shocked at what I found when I arrived at my destination, Cambodia.
The atmosphere and the ways of life there were so strong that my perspective of the world had totally changed. It was a very good opportunity for me to think seriously how narrow a world I had lived in. Then I was ashamed of myself because all of the attendees of the tour considered the problems of child poverty. The trip was only 9 days, but it was enough time to change my conscience.
Doing my internship in "Kamonohashi Project"
After I returned to Japan, while I commuted between university and my home, I started doing my internship at Kamonohashi Project, which organised the study tour. My visit to Cambodia motivated me to take action. Though I played a role in another student group, I also immersed myself in the world of international cooperation for one year. Those who I had met during the internship became important to me. One was a social entrepreneur with a big mission and one was a university student with a big dream. The experiences I gained during the activity with them were priceless. This period was not an official gap year but it was so valuable for me that it became the equivalent.
A two-month internship at earthquake-disastrous Tohoku
Why did I stay locally in Japan after I had been engaged in gaining experience in international cooperation?
The turning point was the earthquake on March 11th, 2011. While up to that point I had been interested in only overseas, the disaster made me focus on and have more interest in my native country. Joining volunteers at Tohoku, I began to consider not only the revival of Tohoku but also potential problems in villages or fishing villages. I noticed while I volunteered that the number of elderly people is huge. I considered the shortage of welfare centres and staff. I also considered how the revival of villages would be realised. Just two months of volunteering wasn't enough time to solve these questions. I thought I had to know much more about Japan. There are many more people in Japan who need helps and aid and I anticipated the number would increase.
I took a registered absence from university and spent days in Japan
Planning vaguely to stay and take actions in Tohoku, I partly knew about a project of "Promotion of Interaction with Food and Local Areas" operated by the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. This is a project which aims to solve problems in local areas and make opportunities for business or migration there by staying six month at villages or fishing villages. Because I wanted to come to grips with potential problems in Japan, I decided to stay in Tohoku to join in this project immediately. Though I had some struggles and anxieties to stay in Japan because most people choose to go abroad, I couldn't allow myself to escape from domestic problems as a Japanese.
Having time to consider my own life, I developed confidence to construct my own sense of values.
I write this essay after spending two months in Ayukawa, Shiga, and many people wonder what I, as a university student, can learn from and contribute to the farming villages. In the perspective of learning, it's precious for me to find what I want to put life long emphasis on. To tell you more precisely, I was surrounded by the rat race of the world and usually felt pressured to study, find a job and better myself. However visiting a farming village, I breathed fresh, clean air and met with people who live at their own pace with agriculture. By meeting with them I could dispose of my concerns and consider basic thoughts about my life. I got confidence to think about the happiest and most consenting ways of my life, not from the people around me but from my own sense of values
Gaining acceptance at Ayukawa, Shiga - that is my present challenge.
There are many more pressures around me; however, I question whether I could contribute to solve problems in the area. Firstly, the main contributors to local revitalization are the local population. There are few changes and effects if outsiders like me, migrate to take actions. There exists, especially in rural areas, many kinds of obstacles and complicated human relationships, therefore I have been trying the best way I can to inspire changing opportunities.
However, there has been some new actions connected with local revitalization in Ayukawa, I would like to support them in areas where it is difficult for the local people to take action. I also think it's interesting that finally I am recognized and live as a member of Ayukawa.
What I want to say in the end
Looking back on the path I had taken after joining the study tour in Cambodia, it seems like I was doing many things without any connections. I was even asked what I want to do in the future many times by the people in Ayukawa. I couldn't answer well, but it's true that there are some steady connections among the experience from Cambodia, Tohoku and then Ayukawa and that the former experience originated to choose the latter way. I think it's good to take a path towards the final goal but also good to choose a path each time, considering each period. I look forward creating my next stage in life.

I. Attention deficit hyperactivity disorders
Abstract. Some previous studies have reported the involvement of magnesium (Mg) deficiency in children with ADHD syndrome. In this work, 40 children with clinical symptoms of ADHD were followed clinically and biologically during a magnesium-vitamin B6 (Mg-B6) regimen (6 mg/kg/d Mg, 0.6 mg/kg/d vit-B6) which was set up for at least 8 weeks. Symptoms of ADHD (hyperactivity, hyperemotivity/ aggressiveness, lack of attention at school) were scored (0-4) at different times; in parallel, intraerythrocyte Mg2+ (Erc-Mg) and blood ionized Ca2+ (i-Ca) were measu- red. Children from the ADHD group showed significantly lower Erc-Mg values than control children (n = 36). In almost all cases of ADHD, Mg-B6 regimen for at least two months significantly modified the clinical symptoms of the disease: namely, hyperactivity and hyperemotivity/aggressiveness were reduced, school attention was improved. In parallel, the Mg-B6 regimen led to a significant increase in Erc-Mg values. When the Mg-B6 treatment was stopped, clinical symptoms of the disease reappeared in few weeks together with a decrease in Erc-Mg values. This study brings additional information about the therapeutic role of a Mg-B6 regimen in children with ADHD symptoms.

Through travels and other experiences around Japan and the world from my university days, I recognized that many Japanese products, services and various cultures are popular in the world. After that I joined in a start-up venture enterprise for internship.
