Abstract
This study of the transgenerational effect of reflective functioning is a component of a larger comprehensive study that focuses on the development of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for the support of clinically significant mother - child interactions. The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between a mother’s level of reflective functioning and the mental health of her children. Reflective functioning is defined as the ability to recognize and understand ones own mental states, such as emotions, intentions, and wishes, as well as those of others, through symbolism and abstract thought processes, and to consequently show an appropriate reaction to those metal states (Fonagy, 1999). The AAI and the CBCL 1 ½ -5 were used to measure a mother’s level of reflective functioning. The CAT- H and the interpretations of HFDs by Kopptiz were used to measure a child’s level of clinical disturbance.
This study investigates if mothers with a limited or negative level of reflective functioning are more likely to have children who show signs of a clinical disturbance than mothers with a moderate to high level of reflective functioning. Secondly, if the lower the level of reflective functioning a mother has the more signs of a clinical disturbance her child will show. Thirdly, mothers with a moderate or high level of reflective functioning should be able to asses their child’s level of clinical disturbance, therefore, each mother’s AAI results should correlate negatively with their scored responses on their CBCL 1 ½ -5, consequently underlining the reliability of the AAI results. A significant negative statistical relationship between a mother’s level of reflective function and her child’s level of clinical disturbance is shown between the AAI and the CAT-H. However, especially in a study where N = 14, one can not speak of a causal relationship. A comparison of the AAI and HFD did not yield a significant correlation. This is very likely due to the unsatisfactory validity of the HFD in this study. Differences between clinical and control groups based on their AAI, CAT- H, and HFD results were analyzed. The analysis of the AAI proved to be significant. The analyses of CAT- H and the HFD proved to be insignificant. Further descriptive analyses show that when the AAI and the CAT- H were compared, a medium effect was found. When the AAI and the HFD were compared, a very slight effect was found. In relation to six symptom scales of the CBCL 1 ½- 5 each mother’s AAI results correlated negatively with their scored responses, thus underlining the reliability of the AAI results.
