Names of active domains (millions)
b. Open Registry, start up luxembourgeoise créée par un vétéran français du nommage et les équipes techniques du .be et .eu,

In the first quarter of 2012, ICANN, the organization in charge of worldwide regulation of the Internet, is going to create the conditions for a boom in the category of domain name extensions (gTLDs).
• The world market of domain names accounts for 3 billion € in sales with growth of 8% per year. It will be invigorated by the creation of new first level domain names (extensions or gTLDs: generic top-level domains), that will not only completely eliminate the need for the .com, .net, and .org endings, but also give more meaning to domain names. Today there are 220 million active domain names on the Internet.
• StartingDot’s objective is to acquire ten year licenses of new extensions from ICANN that have been carefully selected in order to manage commercial operations (the sale of secondary domains). StartingDot has constructed a technical, legal, and commercial infrastructure in order to be completely operational by the end of 2012 and positioned as the only private French enterprise in this emerging marketplace.
The company has raised1.5 M€ of a 2.5 M€ pre-money valorization.
The Opportunity : a new generation of extensions
Since the creation of the Internet, alongside the geographical extensions such as .fr or .jp, 21 generic extensions (gTLDs) were created, the oldest and most popular being .com and .net (since 1985), managed by Verisign (VRSN.US, mkt. Cap. $5.6 billion), who holds 85% of the gTLD market. Since 2000, 14 new generic extensions have been created, the most popular being .info (7 million domains) and .mobi (1 million domains):
The Evolution of gTLDs:
•Pre-ICANN, 1985: .com, .edu, .gov, .mil, .net, .org, .arpa
From January 12 to April 12, 2012, ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) will open candidacy session that will be open to the entire world and to every organization that can meet the demands of the specifications of registering an extension, as well as putting down $185,000 for each requested domain. The expected result is an explosion in the number of extensions, which will produce an Internet that is not only better organized, but full of domain names that have richer meaning. Nearly 200 enterprises in three broad categories have been made public as of today: brands (.deloitte, .canon, .toshiba…), territories (.paris, .bayern, .nyc…) and groups (.hotel, .shop, .gay…).
The ICANN initiative also seeks to satisfy the hundreds of millions of internet users who speak languages whose alphabet differs from the Latin alphabet, by authorizing the creation of new extensions written in Cyrillic, Greek, or Chinese characters, for example.
Strategy: acquire and distribute the TLDs dedicated to the trades of SMBs
StartingDot is going to apply to ICANN for a portfolio of 6 new extensions (confidential list accessible under the NDA). As soon as the extensions have been acquired, via a ten-year license, StartingDot will market the second level domain names of these new extensions, selling yearly subscriptions, both directly and indirectly (International Network of Copyright Offices).
StartingDot has analyzed 3,000 possible extensions and has narrowed in on 10 that are considered to have strong potential based on the following criteria: ICANN monocandidature (according to our records), size of the market (number of businesses), maturity of the category in Internet usage, institutional support (notably from professional organizations), number of Google searches of the keyword of the extension, etc…
Economic model: weak fixed costs and variable costs
The ICANN licenses themselves actually constitute a rather low fixed cost (20,000€ per year, per extension, to which 0.15€ per active domain name must be added). The repayment of the development costs over the course of ten years is also rather weak, on the order of 20,000€ per year. As for the direct operating costs, (hosting, technical operation of the registry…), they will run about 3€ per domain per year, and will decrease according to a volume discount.
StartingDot’s strategy is to focus on extensions that are dedicated to SMB categories for which a direct correlation between their trade and their domain name is of the utmost importance. The price of these extensions will be higher than their current rate (average price point of 45€, with the price range starting at 29€ for the more generic extensions and all the way up to 79€ for those that are more specialized). The marketing will be relatively inexpensive due to the limited number of prospective targets, advertising that is essentially all online, and the team of professional associations who are partnering with StartingDot (5€ per year per active domain in advertising costs).
The crux of the business plan rests on conservative estimates of 30,000 domain names/extensions in its 4th year of existence, from 5-7% of potential clients, keeping in mind that a majority of them will prefer to keep their existing domain name. Our extensions will mainly be of interest to new businesses that are unable to find available “.com” domains that are compatible with their business name (2-3%), businesses that are updating their website and wishing to justify their domain name (2-3%), and finally, businesses who are simply wishing to protect the name of their company (1-2%).
With a base of 3 million potential SMB clients of the extensions developed by StartingDot, a commercial success of 20% penetration would lead to selling 600,000 domain names, which is three times the objective of the business plan (C.A. potential: 25 M€).
Market Size
As of December 2011, the gTLDs other than .com and .net represent a total of 20 million active domains, of which 18 million are .org and .info (source: Nominet).
Names of active domains (millions)
The growth of the market for new gTLDs is unknown, but its potential can be approximated thanks to two different sources:
a) In their selling memo, TLDH, StartingDot’s British counterpart (10 M€ of capital, goal of 30 extensions), discussed a market of 78 million domains “new gTLDs” in 2012 and 101 million in 2015.
b) The technical operator of the Australian ARI Registry completed a study of the marketplace with Empirica Research in October 2011 showing that:
i. 49% of the SMB interviewed showed interest in purchasing a domain name with an extension that corresponds directly with their business,
ii. 20% of Australian shopkeepers wish to purchase a .SHOP,
iii. The estimated annual subscription would potentially be 47% higher than the average price of their current subscription, the estimated price of the .shop being 60-70€ (businesses based in Australia, Singapore, and Hong Kong),
iv. If they had been presented with the opportunity to purchase such a domain when first creating their business, 44% of the SMB would have chosen to do so.
Candidacy Strategy
StartingDot has taken steps to ensure that the ICANN application phase will be passed successfully.
a. Actively researching to identify extensions that have no competition or only one other competitor,
b. Delegating the composition of the application packets to an American law firm, Crowell & Moring, a world leader in this specialized type of law,
c. Anticipating negotiations with potential competitors, such as for the extension .ski: Adrenaline TLD will withdraw its application and align itself with StartingDot,
d. Researching exclusive institutional support that will allow the categories to be locked and to file appeals against any future competitors.
Operations
The business is established as a registry operator and pure player, managing its own extensions. The registry activity consists of maintaining, as well as circulating on the network any correspondence between the extension’s domain names and the IP addresses of the servers hosting the corresponding websites while remaining completely accessible as well as totally secure.
StartingDot is focusing its energies on the management of the extension licenses as well as on the necessary advertising and marketing. The company will delegate technical operations of the registry to a subcontractor who will be chosen on December 31, 2011, when the following three providers have finished their consultation.
a. AFNIC, French organization placed under the supervision of the Finance Ministry and notably directing the ccTLD “.fr”,
b. Open Registry, a Luxembourg start-up created by a French veteran of naming and the technical teams behind .be and .eu,
c. Key Systems, the German leader in the business of naming (3 million names in the field of under management).
A team of ten collaborators (that will include a legal department, an advertising/marketing department, and a management department) will be put together at the end of 2012 at the start of commercial operations, which are expected to begin in Q1 of 2013.
Financials
The acquisition of extensions (ICANN costs and consulting costs) is managed as a CAPEX and amortized over ten years.

Lunch on the terrace of the hotel – a few guests converse while eating. PANORAMA: view from the terrace of Lake Geneva, looking at the Swiss Alps.
The hotel pool. A procession of lounge chairs lined up facing the empty pool.
CLOSE UP: a trickle of BLOOD infiltrates the water. The blood suspended under the water like a cloud, pulsating and spreading.
The pool is now filled with blood.
SLOW MOTION: A water aerobics class – four people in swim caps do their exercises in the red water, without seeming to realize that they are splashing around in blood.
END OF CREDITS.
FADE TO BLACK.
EXT. HOTEL—DAY
It is a beautiful day.
A luxury hotel that partly looks out onto Lake Geneva.
A young man pulls up on a motorcycle and parks in front of the hotel.
He removes his helmet and smoothes out his jacket with his hand. 26 or 27 years old, dashing and athletic, blue shirt and dark jacket – JIMMY.
He hangs his helmet on his padlock.
He enters the hotel.
THE MUSIC STOPS.
INT. HOTEL – DAY
TRACKING SHOT: JIMMY CROSSES THE HALL AND APPROACHES THE FRONT DESK.
Behind the counter, the receptionist looks up.
RECEPTIONIST
Hello Sir.
JIMMY
Hi, I have an appointment with Ms. Muller.
RECEPTIONIST
Yes, and you are...?
INT. OFFICE – DAY
Ms. Muller, an elegant woman of around 50 years old, welcomes Jimmy into her office.
MS. MULLER
Mr. Soral.
JIMMY
Hello.
They shake hands.
MS. MULLER
Please, have a seat.
Jimmy sits and crosses his legs.
CLOSE UP ON JIMMY’S BOOTS – LITTLE BROWN LEATHER ANKLE BOOTS, THE ONLY THING THAT DOESN’T QUITE MATCH UP WITH THE REST OF HIS ENSEMBLE WHICH IS RATHER SUBDUED.
Ms. Mueller consults a résumé on her desk.
MS. MULLER
Is this your first time in Switzerland?
JIMMY
Yes.
MS. MULLER
(reads)
Two years at the Club Med Gym of La Baule,
one year as a fitness instructor in
Marseille...two years in Marbella...
You are drawn to the South.
JIMMY
But I haven’t lost the north...
Ms. Mueller smiles politely.
MS. MULLER
Your journey here intrigues me a bit.
You have no experience in the
business of luxury hotels. I wanted
to meet you anyway, but you must
be aware that I will need convincing.
JIMMY
It’s true that I don’t have
much experience in this sort of
establishment, but I really do
have experience.
MS. MUELLER
What makes you think that you
are right for this job?
What can you bring to our team?
JIMMY
I’m good with people.
I am always in a good mood…I
am demanding. I know that
the devil is often in the details.
MS. MULLER
Always.
JIMMY
Always.
MS. MULLER
Hmmm.
(she’s taking notes)
That’s good, that’s good…What
does being in the business
of luxury mean to you?
JIMMY
(he considers the question)
Being ready to do whatever the
client wants. No matter what,
no matter when.
It is obvious that Ms. Muller has never considered things in quite that way.
MS. MULLER
That is an interesting description.
And that is not far from the truth.
...
How old are you, 26, is that it?
JIMMY
27.
MS. MULLER
You seem older.
(he smiles, easygoing)
That is obviously not a problem.
...
Another question.
Do you have tattoos?
JIMMY
No ma’am. No tattoos anywhere.
INT. GYM, LOCKER ROOM – DAY
Jimmy changes in the locker room.
We see that he has a tattoo on his buttocks: two spread wings.
Jimmy puts on boxer shorts, and then his new fitness instructor gear – white pants and a white shirt.
He looks at himself in a mirror. He knows he looks good.
INT. GYM – DAY
Meditation music.
A young woman, about 30 years old, dressed in workout attire and stretching.
Facing her, as if looking into a mirror, Jimmy is in his immaculate attire demonstrating the movements that she is supposed to be reproducing. He is very patient.
JIMMY
You unroll the spine, vertebrae
by vertebrae...finishing with the
head...Clasp your hands above
your head and stretch them
toward the ceiling...Then stand
on the balls of your feet, looking
up...Hold the position...and let it go.
We see that there is no questionable about his attitude.
The woman is pretty, but Jimmy remains professional.
