HI ALL!
I need some advice esp from those of you living in the US
I'm organising a 4-week coast-to-coast journey in the US with a friend of mine.
We have no idea. We'll probably land in NYC and then rent a car. got any suggestions?places to visit, car rental, low-cost US airlines for home flights,.. thanks a lot

Having driven across the country several times, I can tell you that there are many interesting sites, including Carlsebad Caverns and the Grand Canyon (in New Mexico and Arizona, respectively).
If winter still hasn't ended by the time you take your trip, and you think you might like to see cities like Chicago and Madison, Wisconsin (they say the latter is really nice), I'd recommend a vehicle with 4-wheel drive, just in case your run into any snow.

In the end, it all depends on what you'd like to see along the way, e.g., natural wonders, small towns, big cities with lots of night-life, historical monuments, etc. That said, if you'd like to see breathtakingly beautiful scenery, once you're in California, make sure you visit Lake Tahoe (on the border between California and Nevada); driving into Lake Tahoe through the mountains (on the California side) will be something you might just remember for many years to come. I did it about 20 years ago, and remember it like yesterday.

Just a thought, you'd probably be better off to fly from Italy to Los Angeles, drive to NYC, and then take a plane back home from there. Chances are airfares from NYC to Italy will be less expensive than from California (even though you will be paying both ways t the end, travelling less hours might be a welcome perspective after four weeks on the road).

As Marcelo pointed out, there are so many things to see, that it is difficult to come up with an all inclusive list. Just in California, the coastal highway from Los Angeles to San Francisco is breathtaking; then there is the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, the natural beauty of Utah, Colorado, Wyoming; and I would not want to miss Chicago, and Washington D.C.
My guess is that you will find that 4 weeks are just not enough to cover much, so I would pick 4 or 5 landmarks I really wanted to see, and start from there. What ever else comes across you on your trip, will be "value added".
Also, bear in mind that "European distances" and "Unites States distances" are two different sets of measures. Driving from NEw York to Chicago takes about 10-12 hours. Good luck and enjoy!

Niagra Falls is shared between Ontario (Canada), and New York (US). But to be quite honest, the Canadian side of the falls has a better view.

As far as travel goes, I have always had good luck comparing between a few major discount travel sites in the US. ; orbitz.com, hotwire.com, priceline.com, and expedia.com. You will not find a huge price fluxuation between the competing sites, but you can find some worth while deals when comparing. You can also schedule car rentals, and book hotels on these sites (many times with a discount when you book everything together).

thanks you all for your precious advice...My friend and I have started planning the journey...
we'd like to rent a car but the price for the whole period is extremely high... so we're thinking of renting the car from NYC to Chicago, drop it there and then fly to LA or San Francisco..
is it true that if I book a flight from Italy, it costs more than booking it on the spot?
any other suggestions?
