Something mysterious has happened. I didn't do anything to change it, but the map square in my profile has suddenly gone completely blank - the square is there, but it's empty.
I've submitted a support request but the answer I received was unsatisfactory, simply telling me to edit my map location. I tried this and found that the grid references in my profile were correct. I tried editing as instructed, but nothing changed and the map square remains empty.

I've now found that when I look at the profiles of other Prozians their map squares are also completely empty.
Why has this happened and what can I do about it? Help and advice, please.

I can see it Jun 24, 2012

Hi Jenny,

I can see your map and other maps too. Maybe it has to do with a browser update? Has anything changed in your browser?

Same problem Jun 24, 2012

Don't worry Jenny, it's a browser issue. I've had the same problem since the middle of last week. I've also lost sound on You Tube (it's fine on other sites). I use IE9. I've just tried Chrome and the maps are there. I suppose we just sit and wait for a browser update to fix the issue.

Thank you, Nina Jun 24, 2012

Thank you, Nina. The fact that you can see my map and those of others makes my situation even more mysterious.
I haven't consciously changed anything about my browser (I wouldn't know how to) and don't know how to ascertain whether the browser has somehow changed itself or what I could do about it. Forgive my technical ignorance.
Jenny

Maybe your browser updates run automatically Jun 24, 2012

Hi Jenny,

It´s only an idea, but it is possible that you are not aware whether something changed in your browser if updates run automatically. What browser do you use? I use firefox and have no problems seeing the maps. Lisa uses Internet Explorer, maybe you too? This would explain it.

I can see your map, Jenny - plus the maps of others, and my own. It may be a browser cache problem. Try rebooting your computer.

Rebooting didn't do it for me Jun 24, 2012

I've rebooted (I turn off my computer at the end of every day) two or three times since the problem arose.

Jenny, just in case you don't have Chrome and decide to download it to override any current IE issues please be very careful. I got a new PC a couple of months ago and decided to download Chrome two or three weeks ago. I Googled for the link and clicked on the first one in the search listings. It turned out to be a virus. First time it's ever happened to me; it got through McAfee and was catastrophic. It took McAfee 2 days and about 5 hours on the 'phone to clear my computer. Golden rule? Always type in the URL, if you know it, or if you Google for it examine the search listing very carefully indeed to be sure it's a good 'un.

Thanks, everyone Jun 24, 2012

Thanks to all who replied. Yes, like Lisa, I use Internet Explorer, so it looks as if it's something to do with that and I'll just have to wait patiently for it to adjust itself. Rebooting doesn't restore the map.
I suppose maps are not of great importance in one's profile, but I just like them. Almost Land's End, Tom, but not quite. Penzance is about 12 miles east of there.

1. I can see it, 2. Which browser Jun 24, 2012

Jenny: I can see the map (Sunday morning 10:38 BST) and it shows that you are somewhere near Land's End.
As the others wrote, it could be a browser issue. I am using Firefox (version 3.6.8, which is a year or two "out of date"). Firefox is part of the Mozilla project: it contains contributions from a large number of programmers and its code is "open" so that everybody can see exactly what it does, if they choose to download the code and look at it.

Instead of rebooting the computer, you could try simply clearing the cache and/or the history. I'm not sure how later versions of Internet Explorer do this but it's probably easy. In IE version 6, it's: Tools > Internet Options > the General tab, "Temporary Internet files" and "History".
(I started writing this before Jenny posted her "Thanks, everyone" item, but it's still applicable).

Map appears fine inside MSIE 9 and Firefox (whatever is current version)] Jun 24, 2012

Greetings.

Today is Sunday, 24 June 2012.

May I add to the kind comments of other respondents in this thread and observe that the map linked with your profile appears clearly inside MSIE 9 and Firefox (whatever is current version, since Firefox tends to install automatic upgrades).

As others mentioned, the problem of that "disappeared map" most likely seems to be with the current browsers installed and running in your computer.

Hope this helps.

A curious quirk ... Jun 24, 2012

Thank you again, everyone. I've tried clearing the cache and/or history in the browser (Internet Explorer), but the map box still remains empty.
It seems to be generally agreed that it's a browser problem.
The curious quirk is that all the other items in my profile (and the profiles of other Prozians I've looked at) remain visible - the picture, calendar, everything else, unchanged. I wonder why only the maps have disappeared. I'll probably never know.

Windows Update? Jun 25, 2012

Probably due to your Windows Update to be automatically downloaded and installed, thus it's quite transparent to you. Not sure if it's advisable, but you can check to see if your system restore points shows an update just prior to your problem. If you find that it is a pain, then restore to that point. Otherwise, might just have to wait for the fix to come from Microsoft

Return of the map Jun 29, 2012

In case anyone's interested, the map has just returned to my profile - hooray. I'm now located right at Land's End, rather than in Penzance as I was before and actually am, but that's near enough not to matter. Ah, the mysteries of the ether ...
