German term

umbauten Fläche

German to English Art/Literary Architecture Mannheimer Schloss

covering an area of ...

Whatever the existing website says, it is highly unlikely that the floor area is 6 hectares ("floor area"- as Wendy says - would include each storey separately on the same plot of ground and that concept is certainly not implied by "umbaute Fläche"). It is far more likely that the 6 hectares is the "footprint" of the Schloss, including the large central courtyard.

agree pj-ffm : Indeed, I've done a quick calculation and 6 ha is likely the area of the entire site. They'll need to reprint their English flyers... ;-)

German term (edited): umbauten Fläche

floor area

I would normally use "enclosed grounds/area" for "umbauten Fläche", but in this case they seem to be describing the fact that the internal floor space of the palace amounts to 6 hectares.

From the brochure on the web site:
"With a vast courtyard, a facade spanning more than 400 metres and a total floor area of 6 hectares..."

As mentioned, on their website they use "floor area". It's possible that they really mean "building footprint" or "enclosed area", but without plans I cannot say. A search on "built area", however, shows that it is not used like this in native English.

surface area

This text uses both floor area and surface area. Floor area is the sum of all floors, whereas surface area is the built-on area.
