French term

justesse

French to English Marketing Wine / Oenology / Viticulture tasting notes
Tasting notes for a Saint-Joseph wine made with Syrah grapes. I'll give you the whole paragraph for context, but it's mainly the term "justesse" that I'm struggling with.

Le nez rappelle un panier de fruits rouges, avec des notes de pain d'épices. En bouche ce St Joseph est franc avec de la gourmandise et de la souplesse. Beaucoup d'équilibre et de *justesse* pour ce vin de plaisir.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Carol Gullidge Jul 5, 2022:
A bit late, I know... but I can't help thinking that something more precise, such as Samuël's suggestion sounds far more appropriate. In my experience, French wine terms are extremely precise, and never the airy-fairy invented nonsense used by British and/or Aussie TV presenters of decades ago! You just can't get away with inventing some "appropriate-sounding" term nowadays.
I've found this term dotted around; I just wish I knew exactly what is meant!

Mark There are a few Fr-En wine-tasting glossaries on the www
Here is one of them, albeit it hasn't got "justesse"

Hahaha...just had a quick look at Samuël's entry...you know what? LexiVin says "precision".
But I don't think it's right for this context.

I think this is an honest, full-hearted wine, nothing too fancy.
Conor McAuley Jun 22, 2022:
Nothing much helpful in LexiVin.
Samuël Buysschaert Jun 22, 2022:
Fwiw Just an idea,
maybe "precision"

Examples:
"Great precision and balance in the mouth, with velvety black fruit such as
blackcurrant and blackberry, but also a bright touch of redcurrant
that harmoniously integrates with notes of garrigue, thyme and white
pepper." La Madone
https://www.calmel-joseph.com/wp-content/plugins/cj-wine-pdf...

"It has a nose of healthy red and black fruit along with the dusty Red Mountain minerality. Medium to full-bodied, the palate reveals a well-made wine with precision and balance and evolving expressions of red flowers, dusty minerality and balancing tannins on the long, well-structured finish." hits the right notes

I'm not sure there is a single correct translation for this term, but you could turn the sentence around a bit and lean into the musical definition of 'justesse', i.e. going for something like "This is an enjoyable, well-balanced wine that hits all the right notes."

Thanks!
Example sentence:

Inky in color, the wine hits all the right notes with its floral, camphor, blackberry, incense, espresso and black currant aromatics.

authenticity

It's surely one of those words that - in tasting notes in particular - could be translated a thousand ways.

'Authenticity' might be one of them.

Authenticity is even the name of a Californian Syrah-based wine (which might not be a reason for using the word, but just so's you know).

"Every wine region in the world has its own terroir that gives its bottles authenticity"

honest

The wine is nothing fancy, but it does what it tries to do very well.

"it's an honest wine"

Thanks Chris! Modest, unassuming, unflashy maybe too, but the chosen answer was rightfully selected methinks.
agree Jennifer White : yes, have heard this in connection with wine." What is an HONEST Wine? Great wine is honest wine. A true expression of what the land, the growing season and the climate has to offer." etc.
