The French Imperial Eagle (Aigle de drapeau, lit. "flag eagle") refers to the figure of an eagle on a staff carried into battle as a standard by the Grande Armée of Napoleon during the Napoleonic Wars.
Although they were presented with regimental colours, Napoleon's regiments tended to carry at their head the Imperial Eagle.

Siege of Metz (1870)
The French calculated they had enough food for 70,000 civilians for three and a half months and five months worth of provisions for a regular garrison. Because the entire Army of the Rhine was trapped in the fortress, the provisions only lasted for 41 days and the oats for 25.[5] The Germans brought up 50 heavy siege guns from Germany to bombard Metz, but the fortress was too heavily stocked with artillery and well-built for it to be taken with the means available to the Germans. Unable to silence the fortress guns sufficiently to conduct siege operations, the besiegers opted to starve out the trapped French army.

Siege artillery were heavy guns and other bombardment devices designed to bombard fortifications, cities, and other fixed targets. They were capable of firing heavy cannonballs or shells but required enormous transport and logistical support to operate. They lacked mobility and thus were rarely useful in more mobile warfare situations. They have been generally superseded by strategic bomber aircraft and surface-to-surface missiles in modern warfare.

Back of this wood was the strongest part of the French position. It was covered by a deep road with sides fifty feet high, back of which was a plateau 325 to 600 feet in height.
Behind this is the Rozieriulles hill, along the slopes of which the highway to Metz runs. This whole steep was covered with rifle-pits in three tiers. Behind these were the infantry; behind the infantry the artillery. The highway as it runs along this hill is only 5,000 yards in a straight line from Fort St. Quentin, one of the strong outworks of Metz.
