: No direito penal brasileiro o termo técnico é "insanidade mental". A insanidade mental é matéria de defesa, mas é preciso exame médico-legal para comprová-la (art. 149, CPP).

Pelo que eu entendi mental defenses é equivalente a "mental disorder", ou seja, distúrbios mentais. Mas no direito penal significa "Insanidade mental"(um termo mais técnico).
