Una de las acepciones de Scotch en inglés es cinta adhesiva, si bien usualmente se cita como "Scotch tape". En español latinoamericano es muy común solamente citarla como "scotch" en minúsculas (o durex en México), dado que hace años el nombre comercial se utiliza para denominar la cinta adhesiva (además de "cinta adhesiva").

Los métodos típicos de testeo de la adhesividad de pintura sobre piezas están descriptos en el artículo "Paint adhesion testing"

En la sección "Cross-cut Test" se describen dos métodos estándar ASTM que coinciden con la descripción del test en la patente que cita el uso de un "scotch". En ambos se hacen incisiones en forma de red con un elemento cortante (como se describe también en la patente), luego se pone cinta adhesiva y se la despega rápidamente, y luego se califica en una escala de 0 a 5 (como se describe también en la patente) cuanta pintura fue removida. Son los estándares "ASTM D 3359 Test Method A" y "B".

Dentro de la clasificación de cintas adhesivas, hay otras como: cinta cristal, cinta canela, cinta de enmascarar (masking tape), etc.
Sin embargo, en el contexto que mencionas, yo la usaría más adecuadamente como cinta adhesiva.
