Swedish term

analys

Swedish to English Tech/Engineering Construction / Civil Engineering
I have a customer who wants his educational transcript from UU translated. He took Elektroniklinjen. He claims that "Analys E1" is "Calculus" and not "Analysis". I would have thought "Calculus" was "Kalkyl"? I just want to confirm with any other people who might have taken this program.
Proposed translations (English)
4 +1 calculus
4 Numerical analysis

Discussion

Paul Lambert Jan 19, 2021:
Just to straighten out a slight nuance "kalkyl" also translates as "calculus", but its meaning is in a slightly different sense, i.e., "a calculus" or an intricate arrangement of parts, generally. As opposed to "calculus" meaning the mathematics of rates and constantly changing values.

Numerical analysis

Your client is correct IF he is talking about numerical analysis, otherwise, you are right.
I hope this can help clear up the confusion.

calculus

Granted it was 20 years ago now, but I did the mathematics programme at the University of Gothenburg (though at the Chalmers premises). The course known as "analys" was indeed calculus. It was not numerical analysis, which is a different discipline. Numerical analysis needs to be specified as "numerisk analys" to indicate the difference.
