Russian to English Art/Literary Art, Arts & Crafts, Painting painting
Please, what the English for "подбивка холста".

Discussion

Igor Popov (asker) May 7, 2019:

Tatiana Pelipeiko May 7, 2019:

The Misha May 7, 2019:
Lining only makes sense if... ... it is clear from the context that is is indeed about a restored painting. There is no such thing as "lining" in the original process. The stretched raw canvas is first covered with multiple layers of traditional or acrylic white primer ("gesso") or rabbit skin glue "size" that protects the organic canvas from rot. So this may well be about the state of this underlying primer level - unless it is not.

lining of canvas

The verbum ‘line’, meaning ‘to cover inner side of…’, goes back to the late 14th Century. It is derived from lin (linen cloth), because linen was frequently used as a second layer of material at the inner side of garment in the Middle Ages [16].
The word lining can be compared to the Spanish ‘forración’ and the Italian ‘foderatura’. These words mean lining (of paintings) and can also be
translated as ‘to cover the inside of a garment’.

Note from asker:
Peer comment(s):

canvas stretching

Note from asker:
Peer comment(s):

Peer comment(s):

disagree The Misha : For one thing, this is not easily workable into the sentence, and there is no such thing as "keys" here, which kind of makes your level of confidence suspect at best. For the other, this does not seem to be about canvas stretching.

Thank you the Misha for your opinion. The context is different than I thought, but my version is about canvas stretching. I think you are not familiar with painting.
