Service charge and tray charge on room service!?
On room service in a hotel, there is usually a mandatory tray charge of £2-4 for bringing the food to your room. Should you wish to tip the waiter additionally, that's your choice but I don't and I don't think many people do.
When you go to a restaurant there is often a service charge added. This is typically 10% or 12.5% and is the suggested gratuity. It is discretionary and for the purpose of rewarding your server for the good job they have done. I typically pay whatever they add and if they add nothing, I put on 10% or the next higher round number.
I've just ordered room service and notice at the bottom of the menu it says £3 tray charge and 12.5% service charge (discretionary).
I have never before seen the two combined.
My question is, what service? The service for bringing the food to my room is the tray charge.
