стрелки-разборки

Russian to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
One final question from Mikhail Shevelyov's "Последовательность событий" (http://magazines.russ.ru/znamia/2015/6/4sh.html). Thanks in advance for your time!

About Moscow under perestroika:

"И началось: компьютеры туда, джинсы сюда, бабки в оборот, стрелки-разборки, первая тачка, короче, сыр в масле, все так поднимались тогда..."

"And it began: computers here, jeans there, money into circulation, gang fights°, your first car; in short, everyone was free and easy…"

Am I right in thinking that "стрелки-разборки" are gang fights? Or is it something completely different?

2 SB Stephen, I don't think it's about free-flowing in the sense of people having lots of money. I think it means money being invested in business.

Thanks everyone! Whether or not the author meant to imply shootings is maybe not important here. I'm thinking of putting "criminal showdowns." For "бабки в оборот," perhaps "free-flowing cash"? And never fear, Misha, I'm still working on it.

Quite a lot of it doesn't sound right and needs to be "transcreated" a bit. Otherwise, it comes through as ugly, contrived and resoundingly UNcivilized as all this business really was.

What is meant is a civilized meeting of armed criminal shareholders to discuss mutual grievances according to the prearranged agenda.
I'd say 'showdowns and standoffs'

With your permission, стрелка is the beginning and determination of the quorum of the meeting, checking of the powers of attorney, etc., but разборка is the proceedings, voting and decision-making. The result could be a couple of corpses, but very rarely.
