Until now, however, collecting data from distributed medical sensors has been way too expensive. That’s because every health organisation adopting such an idea needed their own reliable, secure, always-on, expensively-maintained computer system to receive, store and crunch the data they produce. In addition, such data would typically exist only in one place and so could not be accessed elsewhere. These so-called “data silos” are not only expensive, they also stymie doctors who need to access patient data from multiple locations, and make it hard to utilise the data for wider epidemiological studies, too.
