All the world's wisdom is contained in books.
Pretty straightforward. I think your problem was going off-track with "confined" rather than the obvious "contained."

Thank you very much, Rachel! I have always been wondering how come I can never find certain things on the net when other translators do it in a matter of minutes!?! |

Если пословица русская, то перевод найти сложно. Я бы оставила Ваш вариант (или заменила на is kept).

The wisdom of the whole world is in books
An inscription above the entrance of our college library read "Books are the treasured wealth of the world, the fit inheritance of generations and nations"

books are repository of the entire wisdom of the World
I would use no article before "repository", unless you want to imply somehow that there are other such repositories... :)))
Alternatively, "books contain (or better still, "comprise") the entire wisdom of the World".
BTW, why use passive voice when it can be avoided?
Just for the record, the statement is utter rubbish... but, fortunately, that ain't our business...:)))

I suppose that since there are no direct "hits" on my version, it's no good for a truly professional translator whose paramount task, it appears, is "to find the right things on the Internet".:)))

I am positive it's not a "proverb" but just a statement, and a clumsy one at that – both stylistically and notionally.
Note from asker:
Thank you, Michael, for the great work you have done to help me translate this sentence! I really appreciate it. I also tried making my own version of this proverb in English, but thought that my task was to find the English equivalent to this Russian proverb rather than reinvent the wheel, if you know what I mean. And I do always check my translation on the Internet if I'm not sure about it. I guess it will change with practice :) |
