Italian term

morbido

"very smooth" potrebbe andare, in questo contesto?

Discussion

Giulia Tremolada (asker) Apr 7, 2015:
Thank you all for your suggestions! I wanted confirmation that the adjectives "smooth" or "(well-)rounded" also convey the idea of sweetness, and not simply of lack of acidity or low tannins (in the following paragraph it is added that sugar content can be up to 35 grams per litre).

rounded

Another option
Peer comment(s):

neutral Michael Korovkin : "rounded", in wine tasting, is "tondo" / "rotondo" – not "morbido". :))))You often read/hear in the same assay "tondo, morbido, corposo"etc.Since those two terms are often used "side by each", they cannot both mean just the way to say "sweet".

You're quite right Michael. This, however, is a matter of saying sweet without using the word and thus none of the various options will be explicit.

well-rounded

Rounded a little too general

mellow

Mellow: a soft, smooth, often sweet-edged wine a "jug red" and a well-aged Cabernet-Sauvignon or Zinfandel may all be mellow. >>>

From Giles Watson's wine glossary

gives these four words: soft, velvety, chamois-soft and plush
Surprisingly only one of these terms has been posted here.
By reputation Giles is the number one expert on wine with his Gambero Rosso work and when I say reputation, I mean among experienced translators who have worked for him.

From the glossary, rounded = rotondo or pieno
well-rounded = rotondo, grasso, ampio
smooth = levigato, fluido, filante, soave
mellow = moelleux, pastoso
