In a rural areas (at least in LA) it is very common to fence the area with estacas or tree logs set on the ground to define a particular area.

agree Neil Ashby : Years ago, I worked for a summer as a labourer on a gas pipeline laying project, everyone referred to this area as "the strip", so it works for me ;@) (P.S. That was in the UK.)
