catino (dell'abside)

Italian to English Art/Literary Architecture historical church architecture
of the church of St. Mary in Scala Coeli, at Three Fountains outside Rome.

"Nel catino dell’abside, è inserito un bellissimo mosaico realizzato
da alcuni valenti artisti alla fine del 1500."

WordRef (http://www.wordreference.com/iten/catino) says "washbowl" but I think it means the basin-shaped area at the back of the apse. What do you all think?

As you say, it is the basin shaped area in the top part of the apse.
CATINO has got a few meanings in Italian.

"Conch" is entirely correct, as far as I can gather, but I thought it was worth adding an alternative.

Assuming it is half of a proper dome shape, which appears to be the case.
