Hi! How would you translate:" Strawberry cake from scratch" ? as in a recipe name. When looking up "from scratch": desde el principo/ desde cero , but this doesn't make sense in the context. Could it be "torta casera" ?

Hi John + Noni I've included "desde cero" in an answer, the other two suggestions were IMO lacking. Please, please, either of you give it as an answer and I will happily remove mine and 'agree' with yours.

Unfortunately.... ....it has now become the case, at least in Spain, that casero may well mean no more than "not shop bought". To be completely sure I'd be more convinced by sth like "desde cero", which I at least think is quite clear in its meaning.

cake from scratch What it means is making a cake using flour, sugar, butter, etc, rather than using a cake mix, which is a commercial preparation containing some of the ingredients premixed.

Can you give us a bit of context? "Desde cero" would make sense to me... "Desde el principio... hasta terminar el pastel de fresas..."

neutral Neil Ashby : Back translate this and you unequivocally get "homemade cake" which is not the same as a "cake from scratch". I used to buy "Brownie" mix - add milk, mix and place in the oven (even provided a mini oven-tray) - made at home but not from scratch.

torta verdaderamente casera

Independientemente de cómo traduzcas "cake" (torta, pastel), hace referencia a una torta casera, hecha con todos los ingredientes (huevos, harina, mantequilla, azúcar, etc.). Yo lo traduciría como "verdaderamente casera" porque sin duda una torta de cajita también la hacemos en casa.

pastel hecha desde cero

Not sure why everybody seems scared to suggest this as an answer but, IMO, those given so far are not equivalents and so another answer is required.

For plenty of people nowadays "home cooking" / "casera" may simply mean they have heated the food in the over / microwave - the text clearly distinguishes from this type of 'food preparation'.

Thanks Neil for posting an answer. I agree with you in that "desde cero" will be equivalent to "from scratch" , but to be honest "pastel/torta desde cero" or "pastel/torta hecha desde cero" doesn't sound quite right to me. In this case I think "casera" or "casero" serves the purpose better. Thanks again!

"Casera" sounds more like" Homemade" to me, and "from scratch" is when they teach you the basics but, maybe the context refers to something different?
