Italian term

mettere a perdita

FinWord Apr 16, 2013:
I deleted my answer because, on reflection, this sounds like a marketing presentation of Studio Contatto (collection agency) who is saying to potential clients: "...and if we are unsuccesfull, you'll be able write off your client invoices and lower your tax bill" (i.e., our services pays for itself).

to write-off

The temptation is to translate "recognise as losses" or "as expenses" which is not the case. It just means that you can write-off the invoices issued as if they had never been written and as a result they do not count as income. In fact this reminds me, I must see if I can still do this with a client who didn't pay me. I have already paid VAT on that invoice as if I had earned the income. If I don't do anything I will never get that back.

Phil is right. No hyphen for the verb: "to write off", or "a write-off"
