Italian term

viti da compagnia

Italian to English Other Wine / Oenology / Viticulture
Please, help me translate the words from a small text about wine:

Discussion

Barbara Carrara Jun 8, 2012:
Phil I find yours to be the safest option, also compared with others found online, which narrow down the meaning, like potted grape vines, backyard grape vines, home garden grape vines.
philgoddard Jun 7, 2012:
"Viti di compagnia" gets almost no Google hits, so it's obviously not a recognised Italian phrase - or is this text about wine-growing in some other country, and "viti di compagnia" is a translation from another language?

The only way you can paraphrase it is, as Wendy has, by saying household or home-grown vines, but then you basically have a circular sentence: wines grown at home are known as home-grown wines.

Depending on the wider context, which you haven't given us, you might be able to justify leaving this sentence out.

grape vines grown in the same manner as domestic plants

in this case "grown in pots, on the balcony or in the garden in the same manner as domestic plants." Can't think of a shorter way to say it and differentiate the fact between commercial and domestic cultivation of vines.

Plants, dogs and cats are all referred to as "for compagnia" if they are not bred/grown for commercial reasons.

companion vines

I'm not really sure about this, as most ghits are not for grape vines, but I'm hoping someone else can confirm.

neutral Barbara Carrara : Hi! I think 'companion' here would translate as 'consociata' in Italian, as in 'coltura consociata' (companion crop, www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/companion crop). Ciao!

household vines

I grew up around grapes, not in a wine making scenario, but rather household vines which were planted by my grandparents and had grown to cover the entire backyard.

Maybe this works.

...pot- or garden-grown vines are ) pet plants

"viti" are not necessarily "grape", rather! So, "vines" is incidental here. If you want to specify grapes (if it's the case) you must put "grape vines", or just "grape" (no grape plant grows in any other for but vines).

ornamental vines

Detto ciò, la mia proposta è un mero suggerimento che potrebbe dare una soluzione modificando leggermente la frase, così: "...can be considered / assimilated to / deemed to be ornamental plants."
