ah, context makes all the difference! This is a tricky one indeed, definitely not payment related!
It does seem like a fairly common expression in engineering-type fields. I've come across it in the testing sense, so it seems like for your text the last part of the payment is made after the prototype has been tested. So you could incorporate testing into your translation - product test, maybe? But the simplest may just be to use the word validation, it's pretty widespread in the technical field (see example below).
