Дело, конечно, Ваше, но не совсем справедливо к заказчику, наверное. Некот. российские ВУЗы теперь ведь тоже используют 2-х ступенчатую систему (бакалавриат, 4 года+магистратура, 6 лет), стараясь приблизиться к междун. стандартам.

Во-первых, огромное спасибо , коллеги, за Ваши соображения и время , уделенное вопросу.переводимые документы - дипломы, приношу свои извинения за неточную формулировку вопроса ; склоняюсь к тому ,что кандидат соответствует Master, а доктор- PhD ; но не будет ли это превышением полномочий со стороны переводчика, я думаю что будет; понравилась мысль насчет сноски, но неуверена, допускется ли юридически сноска переводчика в тексте перевода диплома.

Lenina,we obviously need to know more.Most importantly – what is the document for(if it's not confidential,of course).Its purpose will certainly clarify a degree of license you can allow yourself in translation.If it's a legal doc youl'have to footnote it

Роза,вот именно!А ДРУГОЙ канадский университет мог бы приравнять ее и к Мастеру(как вы и Сами знаете,именно это“магистр“ и значит)...и не согласно канадской системе образования,а согласно evaluation committee ЭТОГО ун–та!Я в них сидел:знаю какой бедлам.

У меня есть диплом из шведского института на двух языках, где написано, что выпускнику присуждена степень магистра математики. Канадский университет приравнял эту степень бакалавру математики, согласно канадской системе образования.

Согласна, зависит от страны. Поэтому правильнее (и, как говорит Михаил, безопаснее), наверно, в этом случае не подыскивать эквивалент, а дать перевод. Организации, занимающиеся сравнениями дипломов, еще просят обычно транслитерировать степени, напр.WES

Можно и пиэйчди:зависит–куда.В отличие от Штатов,английские степени–не LPT(legally protected titles)т.ч.можно писать чего хочешь.А вШтатах могут заартачиться.У одного моего знакомого(подавал на постдока в MIT) были даже судебные неприяности.Но отбрехался.

Over the years I sat on several degree evaluation commissions: it varies not only from country to country but even from univ. to univ.Indeed, some even validate it as a Ph.D.(unfortunately!), but most – just as an MSc. (Master of Science, Engineering).

Извините, но польностью не согласна с Аленой Фешовець. Много знакомых в Штатах проходят программу на получение степени PhD.

MA (Economics) {please see}

1) In the Anglo-Saxon universities, economics is part of the Faculty of Arts – not sciences.
2) See my note: more often than not American universities tend to validate it as an MA with thesis (rather than a research paper). Yes, everybody knows it's higher than an MA, but it's certainly lower than a Ph.D. To leave it as Candidate would be confusing because then it may be taken for an intermediate ABD qualification = About to Become Doctor or a Ph.D. Candidate.
3) If the milieu is British, then you've got no probs: just translate it as an MPhil (Economics): that's how THEY validate it MOST of the time. But the Yanks don't quite know what to make of it, I mean the MPhil (master of philosophy)

agree Stanislav Korobov : Почти уверен, что Вы правы в отношении "Arts". Что до "MA" или "PhD", думается, всё же, что ближе к PhD. Я когда-то пытался нострифицировать в Англии свою канд.степ.(мед.). Так они официально (письменно) ответили, что, мол, certainly equals to British PhD

Для Станислава. Этот термин (Candidate of Sciences) употребляется самими носителями языка. Предложенный мной перевод не мое собственное изобретение, а выписка из документа, который мне выдали в прошлом году (что свидетельствует о современности и употребляемости термина) в канадском университете (Comparative Education Service, Foreign Credentials, Canadian Explanation), когда я сравнивала российские дипломы и степени. После этой формулировки идет абзац, где объясняется, чему соответствует российское (или другое иностранное) звание в системе канадского образования (см. вышеприведенные notes). Именно этот образовательный эквивалент потом можно включать в резюме и показывать работодателям, которые ничего не знают о российской системе образования и не знают, что такое Candidate of Sciences.

E. g. In 1967 Raisa Gorbacheva… the degree of candidate in the philosophical sciences, the equivalent of a Ph.D.,….[The Dictionary of Russia, p.84]

agree Stanislav Korobov : maybe "Kandidat Nauk (a PhD equivalent)..."... The "Candidate of Sciences" seems to hardly be relevant here because the word "Candidate" (in this sense) is most likely not understandable to a native English speaker...
