Source text - English When she moved into his tiny house in Stroud, and took charge of his four small children, Mother was thirty and still quite handsome. She had not, I suppose, met anyone like him before. This rather priggish young man, with his devout gentility, his airs and manners, his music and ambitions, his charm, bright talk, and undeniable good looks, overwhelmed her as soon as she saw him. So she fell in love with him immediately, and remained in love for ever. And herself being comely, sensitive, and adoring, she attracted my father also. And so he married her. And so later he left her - with his children and some more of her own.
When he'd gone, she brought us to the village and waited. She waited for thirty years. I don't think she ever knew what had made him desert her, though the reasons seemed clear enough. She was too honest, too natural for this frightened man; too remote from his tidy laws. She was, after all, a country girl; disordered, hysterical, loving. She was muddled and mischievous as a chimney-jackdaw, she made her nest of rags and jewels, was happy in the sunlight, squawked loudly at danger, pried and was insatiably curious, forgot when to eat or ate all day, and sang when sunsets were red. She lived by the easy laws of the hedgerow, loved the world, and made no plans, had a quick holy eye for natural wonders and couldn't have kept a neat house for her life. What my father wished for was something quite different, something she could never give him - the protective order of an unimpeachable suburbia, which was what he got in the end.
The three or four years Mother spent with my father she fed on for the rest of her life. Her happiness at that time was something she guarded as though it must ensure his eventual return. She would talk about it almost in awe, not that it had ceased but that it had happened at all.
Translation - Polish Kiedy matka przeprowadziła sie do jego malutkiego domku w Stroud i zajęła sie czwórka jego małych dzieci, miała już trzydzieści lat i wciąż była raczej atrakcyjna. Wydaje mi sie, że nigdy wcześniej nie spotkała kogoś takiego jak on. Ten raczej zarozumiały młody mężczyzna z tą jego żarliwą uprzejmością, jego próżnością i obyczajami, muzyką i ambicjami, jego urokiem, błyskotliwą rozmową i niezaprzeczalnie dobrym wyglądem urzekł ją jak tylko go zobaczyła. Tak więc zakochała się w nim natychmiast i trwała w tej miłości na zawsze. A ona atrakcyjna, czuła i kochająca oczarowała także mojego ojca. I tak ją poślubił. I tak później ją zostawił – z jego dziećmi i kilkoma jej własnymi.
Kiedy odszedł zabrała nas na wieś i czekała. Czekała przez trzydzieści lat. Nie sądzę, że matka kiedykolwiek wiedziała co skłoniło go od odejścia, mimo to powody zdawały się być całkiem jasne. Była zbyt uczciwa, zbyt naturalna dla tego strachliwego człowieka; była zbyt odległa od jego schludnych praw. Była w końcu wiejską dziewczyną – roztrzepaną, histeryczna, kochającą. Była zakręcona i psotna jak kawka, która uwiła sobie gniazdko ze szmatek i świecidełek w czyimś kominie, była szczęśliwa w promieniach słońca, niebezpieczeństwom śmiała się w twarz, wścibiała nosa i była chorobliwie ciekawska; zapominała kiedy jeść albo jadła przez cały dzień, i śpiewała gdy zachód oblewał niebo rumieńcem. Żyła według prostych praw , kochała świat, i nigdy nic nie planowała, potrafiła dostrzegać cuda natury i za nic w świecie nie mogła utrzymać domu w czystości. Pragnieniem mojego ojca było coś całkowicie odmiennego, coś czego ona nigdy nie mogła mu dać – poczucie bezpieczeństwa i ładu panujące na prawdziwej prowincji, co w końcu udało mu się osiągnąć.
Te trzy czy cztery lata, które matka spędziła z moim ojcem dodawały jej sił przez całe życie. Szczęście, którego wtedy zaznała, było czymś co strzegła tak jak miałoby zagwarantować, że on w końcu powróci. Mogła mówić o tym uczuciu z niemal nabożną czcią, nie dlatego że juz go niema, lecz dlatego, że w ogóle go doświadczyła.
English to Polish: Little Translator
Source text - English The Little Translator made his way into the city centre and went into a rather upmarket café there, the Wordtown Waldorf.
“White coffee, but just a spot of lukewarm milk, barman”, he said to the waiter, placing his big envelope on the counter and fishing out the pages inside.
“What’s that?” asked the waiter.
“That? “It’s a translation tes- …” The Little Translator’s chest puffed out a little. He patted the pages a little for effect. “Oh”, he said, in a tone which he hoped was a sufficient cross between blasé and lofty, “that’s a French technical translation I’ve been commissioned to do. Very technical, in fact, yes. Some rather topic-specific vocabulary, I shouldn’t wonder. Just going to give it the once-over with a coffee here, get my ideas in order, if you will, take a decision as to a linguistic strategy.”
The waiter stared at him. “No, I didn’t hear what you said, that’s all. What was it you wanted?”
“Oh”, said the Little Translator, deflating considerably. “It was, erm, a white coffee. Yes, er, thank you, thanks ever so much …”
He walked over to a corner with his coffee - or skulked over, rather - and had a look at the text.
After five minutes reading, he was on page 7 of 12.
By this time the Little Translator was beginning to feel a horrid kind of Frightening Fear taking over his body. Yes, he could feel the cold hand of Fear clutching his stomach.
Or perhaps a bit below his stomach. He was beginning to sweat copiously, too.
“I really don’t have a clue what they’re talking about here”, he quavered to himself, reaching under his shirt and wiping the streams of sweat from his chest. “It’s in French all right, but it’s like a different language or something.”
The Little Translator read a few more pages, and laid the pages down on the table. He stared at the text, and found himself uttering that very human of phrases to himself: “I don’t know what I’m going to do …”
Translation - Polish Młody tłumacz udał się do centrum miasta, gdzie wszedł do raczej dobrej kawiarni – Worldtown Waldrof.
- Barmanie, białą kawkę, lecz z tylko kropelką letniego mleka – powiedział do kelnera wyciągając kartki ze swej dużej koperty.
- A co to takiego? - zapytał kelner.
- To? To jest sprawdz.... - tors młodego tłumacza jakby wypiął się trochę. Przewrócił kilka kartek dla efektu. - ee – powiedział tonem, który miał nadzieję wyrażał coś pomiędzy znudzeniem i wyniosłością – to francuski tekst techniczny, którego tłumaczenie mi zlecono. Właściwie to nawet bardzo techniczny, o tak. Słownictwo raczej specjalistyczne, powinienem się tego spodziewać. Miałem zamiar rzucić na niego okiem popijając kawę i jeśli pan pozwoli, zastanowić się nad doborem odpowiedniej strategi tłumaczeniowej.
Kelner wpatrywał się w niego beznamiętnie.
- Ja po prostu nie usłyszałem co pan zamówił. Więc co podać?
- Aa – widocznie zgarbiwszy się młody tłumacz powiedział. - To miała być, ee, biała kawa. Ee, dziękuję, dziękuję bardzo...
Zabrał kawę i poszedł, a raczej czmychnął, do stolika w rogu gdzie spojrzał w tekst.
Po pięciu minutach czytania był na siódmej z dwunastu stron.
Wtedy właśnie zaczął odczuwać jak ogrania go ten okropny obezwładniający Strach. O tak, czuł jak lodowata ręka Strachu ściska mu żołądek. No, może troszeczkę poniżej żołądka. Pot zaczął ściekać po jego ciele.
- Nie mam zielonego pojęcia o czym tu mowa – powiedział do siebie drżącym głosem gdy sięgał pod koszulkę by wytrzeć strumienie potu spływające mu po piersi. - Jest po francusku ,dobra, ale to jakby inny język czy coś.
Przeczytawszy jeszcze kilka stron młody tłumacz położył je na stole. Gapiąc się w tekst, przyłapał siebie na wypowiadaniu tej jakże ludzkiej frazy - „nie wiem co robić....”
Nigdy wcześniej nie miał Tłumaczeniowego Strachu, Profesor Brookesdudy nigdy o nim nie wspominał.
