Meine theure Marie!
Gott der Allgütige gebe, das mein Brief, dich so wohl die theuern Deinigen, bei bester Gesundheit antreffen möge; das dein liebes gutes Marichen sich so erkältet hat, thut uns sehr leid. Er wird aller bald wieder gut sein schon. Deine liebevolle Pflege, heilt bald, zu dem wenn Er seine glückliche Umgebung betrachtet u. sitzt dabei auf den schönen bequemen Stuhl wo ihn aus einer so lieben wollen Hand empfangen hat; das du so gesund bis mein treues Herz freut uns innig, die Gesundheit – Zufriedenheit – Seelenruh – Heiterkeit – Gemütlichkeit das sind die stärksten Säulen in Leben; alles Andre ist Trödel – mein liebes Männchen ist so weit gesund, ich bin aber kern gesund Gott sei auf ewig Dank dafür, für diese reiche Gabe wann mein gutes Männchen gesund u. zufrieden ist dann bin ich überglücklich, alles Andre fechtmich nicht an, die Blattern sind sehr stark hier, aber gestorben sind noch keine davon, Neumanns u, Tröstners hatten es die Kinder, u. unser Nachbar Kampmann mit seiner Frau hatte es auch, u. da sich niemand umschaute nach Sie, da besuchte ich Sie einmal, ich sage Dir wenn es irgendeine ängstliche Frau gewesen wär, die wär in Ohnmacht gefallen, so schrecklich sah der Mann aus; das bin ich zwar nicht; aber Gott den lieben Gott habe ich gebeten, das Er einen doch nicht so schänd

liche Krankheit zu schickt, ich werde nicht so leicht einen zweiten solchen Patzienten besuchen, ich habe bis jetzt nicht gewußt was Pocken heißt Der Plath hat es auf eben so stark wir Kampmann, der Marschner ist auf Besuch hier, die haben auch ein trauriges Schicksal die älteste Tochter muß so zusagen an einer Krücke gehen, ihr ein Bein est kürzer wie das Andre, u. das kleinste von ungefähr 2 ½ Jahr kam noch nicht sprechen die M. Springer hat ein klein Mädchen Sie läßt auf herzlich grüßen; von der Schrager ihrer Scheny wirst du schon wisten, Die scheint besser zu werden Emilie ist mit Ihren Otto verlobt, die Meier hat erst kürzlich so unheil gehabt das Ihr Hauß ab, gebrannt ist, u. wo Sie jetzt wohnt sollte Sie in 3 Tagen ausziehen Ihr Sohn Otto hatte eine Katzenfalle aufgestellt um Katzen zu fangen, da hatten sie gerade den Amerikaner Tauersen seine beiden erwischt, das war eine Trauer im Hauß um seine schönen Katzen, eiten ganzen Tag soll der eckliche Junge daran geschlachtet haben Sie soll ein großes Fell haben von verschiedennen Katzen, ist das nicht ein eckliches Weil hast du nichts gehört, Ihr Schwager wo damals mit der Reinhold ging, hat eine Brauerstochter bei Milwaukie geheirathet, sein Schwiegervater hat Ihm Alles vermacht, Sie soll eine sehr holde Frau sein, aber nichts hübsch, keine Zähne, u. kann nicht fein nähen, aber sonst sehr reich, da Sie aber so anspruchsloß ist, hatt Sie ein schlechtes Leben u. Ihr Mann mag Sie nicht leiden, da soll nun die Meier mit unter der Jecke sein, wenn das war wär, wär, es so schrecklich schlecht von Ihr eine junge gute liebe Frau so unglücklich zu machen.

May God Almighty grant that my letter may find you and your dear family in the best of health; we are very sorry that your dear good Marichen has caught such a cold. Your loving care will soon heal when God looks at His happy surroundings and sits on the beautiful, comfortable chair from which He was received by such a dear willing hand; that you are so healthy my faithful heart rejoices for us deeply; health - contentment - peace of mind - cheerfulness - comfort are the strongest pillars in life; everything else is irrelevant - my dear husband is healthy so far, but I’m really healthy, may God be eternally thanked for this, for this bountiful gift when my good dear husband is healthy and happy then I am overjoyed, all the rest does not bother me, the smallpox is very strong here, but no one has died from it yet, thanks be to God eternally. The Neumann and Tröstner’s children had it, and our neighbor Kampmann and his wife also had it. Their son Otto had set up a cat trap to capture cats; they had just caught the two cats of the American, H. Tauersen, which caused grief in the house for his beautiful cats. The nasty boy is said to have been butchering them all day. I heard she had a big pelt of different cats; is that not disgusting? Because you have not heard about it, your brother-in-law, who went along with Reinhold at that time, married a brewer's daughter in Milwaukie, his father-in-law left everything to him. She is supposed to be a very dainty woman, but not pretty, no teeth, and can't sew very well, but other than that she is very rich. But because she is so modest, she has a bad life and her husband does not like her. Now the Meier family is said to be among the Jecke ; if that were true, it would be so terribly bad of them to make a young, good, dear woman so unhappy.

Wie freute ich mich über Dein mir so herziges Briefchen; Daß du so hübsch an mich denkst u. mich nicht vergessen hast; mein herziges Schätzchen; das freut uns alle Beid, daß du mein süßes kind wieder gesund bist wirs mit Deinen theuren Eltern lieben Schwestern alle zu sammen, da danke ja den lieben guten reichen Gott dafür, u. bete jedem Tag, daß sie viele viele Jahre lang leben, wie reich u. glaublich sind alle Kinder, die wo recht brave Eltern u. gute geschwistricht besitzen; dar kannst du sehen mein gutes liebes Schätzchen wie lieb dich der liebe Gott hat, daß Er dich
