Mini-pupillage in Chambers: unusual in the summer, as the Inns of Court (mediaeval Colleges of Lawyers) close down the whole of August. Solicitors may take on law students as law clerks as trainees, but the latter engagement is not usually confined to the summer. Locum usually connotes a qualified Solicitor in a firm of Solicitors and filling in when members of staff are away on holiday or during maternity /paternity leave.
