My first impression (without looking at the context) was maybe "intra-arterial" but I don't see many therapeutic benefits from administering insecticide this way. This is why I don't do abbreviations....
Joseph Tein Nov 25, 2011:
Muriel nailed it. "Total cypermethrin use in the United States is approximately 1.0 million pounds of active ingredient. (a.i.) per year. "

" Active ingredient (a.i.) - It is that part of the product that actually does what the product is designed to do."
Richard Hill (asker) Nov 25, 2011:
It's an insecticide for crops
Joseph Tein Nov 25, 2011:
Do we know what L-1 is about? My first thought was that "i.a." was a route of administration ... 200 grams administered intra-something ... but I suppose it could also be 200 grams of the active ingredient. That's why I said earlier that it would help if we had more context. If it's ONLY the description, it could be "active ingredient" ... but your Spanish sentence says "evaluados", which makes me think that the stuff might have been administered into the body of some poor test animal for evaluation.
Richard Hill (asker) Nov 25, 2011:
Muriel You answer may well be right?
Richard Hill (asker) Nov 25, 2011:
Hi Joseph! Its just a description of a product on a health certificate. It is an Insecticide-Acaricide but I wasn't sure it the "i.a." stood for "Insecticide-Acaricide". It may be the same in English? http://www.scielo.br/scielo.php?pid=S0100-29452002000200029&...
Joseph Tein Nov 25, 2011:
Take your pick :) Maybe more context might help to pin this down.

Clever! Hadn't occurred to me to reverse the letters. Thanks!

Thanks, Joseph!
agree Nigel Wheatley : "active ingredient" is a specific, technical term when dealing with pesticides, which is why it crops up so often

Thanks, Nigel!!
agree slothm : Technical Cypermethrin is a mixture of 8 isomers. 4 are non active. Of the 4 active isomers the Cis-Cis molecular conformer has the highest activity. When buying Cypermethrin you pay for the high cis conformer content so an analysis is mandatory.
