Juan Jacob tiene toda la razon. Se trata de la persona comun y corriente. El termino que se usa en ingles es 'layman'.

Espantosa redacción en una larguísima frase en la que el lector se pierde. Dicho esto, debiera ser: ...que muy pocos HOMBRES DE A PIE entienden... "Hombres de a pie" es, como dice el o la colega rusa (me disculpará no entender su alfabeto), gente común.
