Spanish term

su buena voluntad, cordialidad y amabilidad

Spanish to English Other General / Conversation / Greetings / Letters Letter to ambassador
Before you rap me over the knuckles for three terms at once, I have to defend myself with the fact that it is the combo which is causing the problem. Every time I come up with a solution for one term, it seems to sit badly with what I have decided on for the other terms.

The writer is thanking the ambassador for his time and also asking him to put in a good word for a cause.

Very formal English, but at the same time I want it to sound like something which might actually have issued from an English pen!

British English to fit in with the rest of my letter.

Thanks for all ideas.

Bubo Coroman (X) Apr 11, 2010:
my comment to Jenni's answer continued... Personally I would write "good will" rather than goodwill to distinguish good will from goodwill which is a business asset (the worth of a business' established client base)
Jenni Lukac (X) Apr 10, 2010:
spot on, Noni.
Noni Gilbert Riley (asker) Apr 10, 2010:
Thanks so far Very useful comments from everyone so far - I already have something I know I can use on the basis of this, although I will "stay open" for longer, since I suspect that Jenni, Margaret and I are the only ones in Spain not currently watching the footie... As it is I have to put up with interruptions of bellowing from my menfolk. ;-)

Should have included this, sorry It's quite early on - before stating the favour to be asked, and having just thanked him for taking the time to read the letter.

Noni, Does this appear at the end of the letter as the writer is "saying goodbye"? If not, at which part of the letter is it?

If the ambassador has rendered the writer a great favour you might substitute "consideration" or "courtesy" for kindness.

Thanks and good evening, Isabel. That makes five ladies and the enlightened Leonardo not watching the Barca-Real Madrid face off tonight!
agree James A. Walsh : As per your chat with Noni, I would opt for "goodwill, cordiality and kind consideration", or some such... (PS: the footie is over :)) PPS: Granada is neither pro-BCN or MAD, but I have to say, there was a lot of fireworks after the match this evening. :))

Barca won again...Not a fan, but living in Zaragoza I miss the cheerful noise from neighbours flats I heard in BCN after a big win. Thanks for the vote. I think the exact choice depends upon the "rank" of the writer relative to the rank of ambassador.
agree Robert Copeland : Nice idea, I really like the suggestion provided by James as well!!!

Thanks Robert. Considering Noni's last comments, I agree with you.

Saludos y gracias Laura.
agree Isamar : Sounds right and I like James's suggestion of "kind consideration". Have good Sunday!

Cheers and thanks. I hope it's a sunny Sunday where you are!
agree Bubo Coroman (X) : frankly I prefer it as you 1st wrote it, with "kindness" because the writer is acknowledging that the ambassador is a kind person (a compliment), which is different from thanking him in advance for a favour. On a separate note, I would write "good will"..

Thanks Deborah. I'm chewing on the "good will" "goodwill" and looking for references to see if there are UK/US distinctions.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks Jenni. For my letter I decided to merge three concepts into two, and used "good will and kind consideration" (taking Deb's comment on board)."
