Explanation:
I agree with the previous suggestion, but I don' think it fits in this context. It seems that the guy who says "A?" had already said something before and is surprised that he was understood; that's why he reacts like that "A?". While if it meant "what?" then it would have had no sense, since he (the "A?" guy)knows what is all about.

So if the context allows it I would rather put something like "did you?" or "really?" or "oh, you did?" or "oh yeah?" or "wow, how come?" and so on.
