Takashi Fukunaga Dec 4, 2023:
Sharma San,
Thanks.
bishan sharma Dec 4, 2023:
split and not sprit Dear Fukunaga San,
That's a common Japanese people mistake of confusing between r and l. Isn't it?
Takashi Fukunaga Dec 3, 2023:
My interpretation of the original Japanese is that 20 players are sprit into 5 groups of 4 players and the winner of the preliminary match(es) in each group (total 5 winners) advances to the final match. If this interpretation is correct,「負け残る」should read as 「勝ち残る」or 「勝ち抜く」.
bishan sharma Dec 1, 2023:
残った5人 4人ずつと残った5人はあいませんね

Elimination match between the losing players/Repechage match

I believe this is the final match for all the losing players, where only the single winner will have the opportunity to advance to the finals.

An update:
I asked someone from Japan regarding this topic recently, and the impression that she had was that this was indeed something like a match between the players who had lost, ending it with "決勝というか決負戦."

While the numbers don't seem to match, unless you can clarify with the original writer, based on the context we have, I still feel that my suggestions are a relatively safe choice.
