Federn means feahters = Plumes. Whenever ver- is added to a word it enhances the meaning of the word. Teuer is expensive and verteuer is to raise the price. verfedern would be the opposite of displume, if we can find one in english!
Comment: "Debra,
I don't mean to be unkind, but if you think that "feahters" [sic] or "plumes" is the correct translation, you shouldn't be answering this question!
Best regards,
Gary Hess"

equipped with springs
There might be a better way to say this, but I am reasonably certain that we are talking about springs here. Feder = spring

gefedert is a much more common expression for the same thing
This is from a description of the inner workings of a DVD player:
Lediglich eine Leuchtdiode, welche die Laufwerksaktivität anzeigt, und ein Auswurfknopf sind dort angebracht. Letzterer ist, wie bei allen aktuellen Laufwerken des Herstellers, etwas zu weich *gefedert* und für größere Finger zu klein.

are sprung
verfedert sind= are sprung.
I would use this direct translated verb as it has a more general tone- the springs might also be rubber bushes, gas filled cushions etc.

i.e. not \"springs\" as such.
