optical step wedges, stepped density/densitometric strips

When testing x-ray equipment for output, the original object is actually an aluminum step wedge.

In photography, a preexposed stepped densitometric strip would fill the same function. Or one could be produced by a sensitomer that provides the stepped (or graduated) exposure.

grey/gray cards

I'm no photography expert, but I found plenty of references to grey cards and step cards. I suppose it could be graduated gray cards.

Or "graduated wedge filter".Seem to remember having something like this in a translation some time ago... Ernst is moderately helpful on photographic stuff.
