German term

tätst

German to English Art/Literary Music
I am having trouble with this line from Kurt Weill's "Die sieben Todsünden", especially the word "tätst":
"Bedenk, was geschieht, wenn du tätst, was dir läge!"
I would appreciate help with this line. Thanks.

if you were to do

Bear in mind what would happen if you were to do as you wished.
Although this is not (at all!) as concise as the original. "Consider" is better...

neutral Ian M-H (X) : "did" feels right, "would do" doesn't. I like Francis's "did as you wished".

agree Ann C Sherwin : Or "did what you were good at." But not "would do".

an attempt

I don't know the official translation of this line, but here is what I think it means:

"Be aware of what would happen if you did what you wanted."

\"Tätst\" is a subjunctive of the verb \"tun\" :-)
Peer comment(s):

agree Laurel Porter (X) : It seems to me that this fits the context of the lyric better, although I prefer Christine's "consider". Possibly even "Imagine what would happen", or "Just think what would..."

Thanks! I agree, "consider" is better, and so are the other options you suggest :-)
agree Siegfried Armbruster : I aggre with Laurel, but "if you did what you wanted" is better than Christines version
