Wirksames Grenzmaß MMVL stellt in Verbindung mit dem MML ein Grenzpaarungsmaß dar, d.h. das ungünstigste Paarungsmaß, bei dem das Geometrieelement den Maximum-Material-Zustand und zusätzlich die größte zulässige Formabweichung (Grenzabweichung) hat, die gleich der Formtoleranz tForm ist. Bild 7 erläutert die Zusammenhänge für kreiszylindrische Geometrieelemente, Bild 7 a für einen Bolzen (Welle), Bild 7 b für eine Bohrung. Beide sollen überall auf der MML liegen und die Geradheitstoleranz ihrer Achse tG voll ausnutzen. Entsprechendes lässt sich auch für parallele Ebenen ableiten. Das wirksame Grenzmaße MMVL ergibt sich nach Bild 7 aus dem MML und der Formtoleranz t (t kann ggf. auch eine Lagetoleranz sein).
