German term

Ausweich-Strategie

German to English Medical Medical (general)
Patient with lumbar back pain:

"Auch die Versteifung der Wirbelsäule sei störend, vor allem beim Bücken. Die Bewegungseinschränkung störe sie jedoch viel weniger, als der Schmerz. Beim Binden der Schuhe oder Haushaltstätigkeiten, die mit Vornüber Beugen einhergingen, habe sie inzwischen Ausweich-Strategien gelernt."

I found avoidance strategy, or rather "avoidance behavior", but I wonder if it can be used here?
I am bothered by "gelernt" as I would think that one would "resort" to this strategy rather than learn it. To me, it is not a positive thing.

Am I missing something and the term here is actually NOT "avoidance behavior"? If so, what is It?

Thanks for your input!

workaround

Forget avoidance behavior. This just means that she's figured out (gelernt) some workarounds to perform certain tasks despite her physical limitations.

BTW, the German should be one word: Ausweichstrategie (makes no sense to have a hyphenated noun).

Compare with example below:

"I have trouble speaking while eating, and over the years I’ve gotten used to dining at home with just my spouse, who understands my limitations. But not everyone does. The holidays, with their extended-family meals and festive parties, can be challenging. Since I want to be a part of these events and still be safe, I’ve figured out some workarounds." https://www.brainandlife.org/the-magazine/online-exclusives/...

compensatory (movement) strategies

I agree with Michael. Avoidance involves a choice, but with a fused spine there is no choice – your spine doesn't bend any more, and you have to find (or 'learn') other ways to get your hand to the floor.

adaptive strategy

as someone who lives with RA, it may be helpful for you to think about the best way to accomplish tasks that require physical exertion, no matter how simple they may seem. It may also require modifying your lifestyle: engaging in low-impact exercise, applying the principles of energy conservation to your daily life, and using helpful adaptive equipment – even for the “easy” things.

Avoidance is defined as “an act or practice of avoiding or withdrawing from something”[i] if one puts this word in the context of a “war in space”, it could be said that Mr. Lamrani and others in the present Administration, are advancing the notion that the best strategy is to “avoid/withdraw” from participating wars in space or “that extend to space”. https://realspacestrategy.wordpress.com/2016/05/29/examining...
