German term
Modellation vs. Modell
German to English
Medical
Medical: Dentistry
"Vor dem Härten wird die Modellation mit Hilfe eines feinen Instrumentes etwas vom Modell abgehoben, denn die Retentionen sollen hohl liegen."
From a text about making dentures.
I've always been somewhat troubled my the word "Modellation" (there are no adequate dictionary translations for this word anywhere I've looked), but have generally assumed it to mean the same as "Modell". Yet in this sentence, Modell and Modellation are clearly representing two different things! HELP!
What I would really like to know is: what are the key differences between Modellation and Modell, because this sentence makes it obvious that there are differences! In particular, I need a useful translation for "Modellation". TIA for any enlightenment you can provide.

impression/cast/mold vs. Mdell/replica
I think the difference here is the difference between a positive and a negative copy of the originall. The 'Modellation' is where you made a temporary cast or mold of the original. You fill out this impression to get back a replica of the original.
A bit more context might help to be sure.

Comment: "Thanks Lars for a very plausible and well-explained answer. I think I ended up calling it a mold or temporary mold in my text. Sorry for taking so long to grade this. Really appreciate your help though."

i would suggest that 'modellation' applies to the process of modelling while 'modell' is the outcome of the process

Comment: "Your answer assumes that Modellation is being used as a verbal noun, when it is in fact a concrete noun in this sentence; hence my difficulty with it."
