to apply a ligature or to ligate

A ligature is also a thread, wire, or cord used in surgery to close vessels or tie off ducts. The act is called 'to ligate' or 'to apply a ligature'. Evert's answer above, while correct, may not be dentristry-specific. He's spot on with 'auxiliaries'.
